Between April 17-18, 2021, the finals of the 11th National College Students Mathematical Competition were held at Wuhan University. Yanyi LI and Haochen LEI, both students of the Department of Mathematics at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), won the second prize for mathematics majors in the finals. This is the best result achieved by SUSTech students in the history of the competition.

In October 2019, the preliminary rounds of the 11th National College Students Mathematical Competition were held at the South China University of Technology. Multiple students from SUSTech won various awards, while Yanyi LI and Haochen LEI also advanced to the finals of the competition. But due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the finals were postponed until April this year.

The National College Students Mathematical Competition is held once a year and is undertaken by major colleges and universities throughout China. It provides a stage for undergraduate students to demonstrate basic math skills and thinking.

The number of applicants for the preliminary rounds of the competition in 2019 exceeded 170,000. The finals were divided into three categories: senior group and junior group for mathematics majors, and a group for non-mathematics majors.
