From August 30th to 31st, 2015, our university welcomed undergraduate freshmen of 2015. Over 900 new students gathered in the beautiful campus of SUSTC, which is located on the bank of South China Sea and Shenzhen Bay, to start their gorgeous and colorful journey. They will spend their four-year university life here, which is going to be the most precious and unforgettable chapter in their life journey. On the morning of 31st, members of the SUSTC leadership, such as Secretary of the Party Committee Li Ming, President Chen Shiyi, Vice-presidents Tan Zheng and Wu Chuanyue, General Secretary Dong Zhaojun, Dean of General Affairs Lu Chun, Chief Accountant Ye Qin, Deputy Director of Preparatory Office Han Wei, etc., came to the academy to visit the freshmen of 2015 and their parents.
It is reported that this year our university enrolls 937 undergraduate freshmen in total, coming from 21 provinces and cities in China. After the beginning of this semester, the number of undergraduate students of our university reaches over 2100. Therefore, our university has built two new academies, respectively named Zhicheng Academy and Shude Academy. There are 4 academies in our university now, including the existing Zhiren Academy and Shuren Academy,.

Li Ming, Chen Shiyi, and other leaders first went to the register hall of the academy, to visit the freshmen who were registering and their parents, and to warmly communicate with them. Along their way, the leaders expressed their greetings to the personnel participating in the welcome work.

In an activity room of the academy, Li Ming and Chen Shiyi had an informal discussion with some of the new students and their parents. Li Ming said, “We have set reception centers in the four academies of our school. Freshmen and the parents can voice any requirements if any. We will be certain to handle it. You can take Shenzhen and SUSTC as your home.” He wished that students could spend four pleasant years in SUSTC. Chen Shiyi encouraged the students to work hard and strive to become useful persons. He said, “The future of each student is the future of SUSTC! We will make great efforts to foster good students, since the future of each student represents the future of our university, of Shenzhen, and even of our nation!”
The academies are key measures for the innovation of SUSTC’s talents training mode. Our university adds two new academies at the beginning of this semester, and vigorously invests in many resources of the academies. In order to welcome new students, the four academies have been decorated, showing different cultural features. Li Ming and Chen Shiyi went to each academy successively, visiting the new students who had already checked in, and expressing their greetings to working personnel and volunteers.

A 14-year-old girl who comes from Shenzhen is the youngest among the freshmen of this year. Li Ming and Chen Shiyi spoke highly of her, and took photos with her. A freshman coming from Liaoning happens to be a childhood partner of a SUSTC student of 2013. They made an appointment to meet in SUSTC due to their love for SUSTC, and now their wish has become true. During the conversation with Li Ming and Chen Shiyi, a parent of a new student from Shanghai said, “Though there are a lot of universities in Shanghai, we yearned for the openness and innovation of Shenzhen and the theory on school management of SUSTC.” Li Ming and Chen Shiyi expressed their thanks for the recognition and support from students and their parents.

While visiting students, Chen Shiyi received interviews from several media, including China News Service, Hong Kong Ta Kung Pao, Nanfang Daily, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, Shenzhen TV, Shenzhen Economic Daily, Southern Metropolis Daily, Shenzhen Evening News, Crystal, Shenzhen Radio, and so on. During the interviews, Chen Shiyi said, “Research, innovation and entrepreneurship are features of SUSTC. Firstly, we will continue to search for top-level professors from all over world and invite them to join SUSTC. In the first half of this year, more than 40 excellent professors have joined us. Secondly, we shall focus on the foundation of talent cultivation. New concepts shall be introduced in the cultivation of innovative talents. We will continue to insist on the collegiate system, small-class education, all-English education and international communication. Our university is still in the stage of development. We shoulder heavy responsibilities. However, I believe that we can foster top-notch innovative talents needed by our country and people through several years’ endeavor.
During the visit, Tan Zheng made specific work deployments regarding canteen supply, logistical support, security and other aspects to make sure that the new students could have a smooth transition to their college life.

It is reported that basically, the registration of new students of 2015 has been completed. Soon, the freshmen will participate in military training.
This is the fourth consecutive year for our university to enroll undergraduates on the basis of the comprehensive assessment mode of college entrance examination, in which the college entrance examination achievement accounts for 60%, the test performance of SUSTC’s autonomous organization ability accounts for 30% (including 5% of interview results), and performance of senior high school academic achievement examination accounts for 10%. Students are enrolled according to their “631” comprehensive performance ranking from high to low. The comprehensive assessment enrollment mode has eliminated the disadvantages of traditional enrollment system, such as “the practice of the unique importance of examination”, “the whole life being decided by one single examination” and “one-sided exam-oriented education”, etc. The new enrollment mode is in favor of the selection of excellent students with subject specialty and innovation potential. This enrollment mode was first implemented by our university in 2012, which is highly consistent with the spirit of the Third Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee related to reform of higher education, and leads the reform process of higher universities’ enrollment system in China.
