On June 22, Times Higher Education (THE) released its THE Young University Rankings with the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), maintaining its position as the best young university in mainland China three years in a row. Furthermore, it’s the first time SUSTech entered the top 30 young universities in the world, ranking 26th in the world, up from 47th last year.
2021 marks the tenth year that the THE has held its Young University Rankings, which lists universities that are 50 years old or younger. It is the third time that SUSTech has been ranked in the Young University Rankings, which includes 475 universities from 68 countries and territories. SUSTech topped the charts for four indicators in mainland China.
The Young University Rankings methodology is based on five performance indicators: teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), international outlook (7.5%), and industry income (2.5%). It is based on the same 13 performance indicators as the flagship THE World University Rankings, but the increments have been adjusted to give less weight to reputation.
As an emerging and innovative university, SUSTech has topped several world university rankings. SUSTech ranked 8th in mainland China and 26th in Asia in the THE Asia University Rankings 2021. In addition, the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Top 50 Under 50 2021 rankings placed SUSTech 1st in mainland China and 36th in the world on its debut.
