Recently, Hai-Zhou LU, Chair Professor of the Department of Physics at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), was awarded the 2021 Achievement in Asia Award (AAA Robert T. Poe Prize) by the International Organization of Chinese Physicists and Astronomers (OCPA) in recognition for his pioneering explorations on the theories of emergent quantum Hall effects.
Hai-Zhou LU’s primary contributions include quantum spin Hall effect and weak (anti) localization of topological insulator thin films, Fermi-arc and charge-density-wave mechanisms of the 3D quantum Hall effects, and disorder-induced nonlinear Hall effects.
He has won the first prize of the Shenzhen Natural Science Award and the SUSTech Presidential Award for Distinguished Achievement in Research. In 2020, he was selected as a national first-class undergraduate course leader.
Prof. LU has long been involved in the theoretical research of topological quantum transport phenomena such as the quantum Hall effect and has published more than 100 SCI papers.
He serves as a member of the Theoretical Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics Committee and the Youth Working Group of the Chinese Physical Society (CPS), Vice-Chairperson of the Guangdong Physical Society. He is also on the editorial board of several international journals.
OCPA is a non-profit professional organization with members from all aspects of physics and astronomy research, including Nobel laureates, Fields Medal winners, and outstanding researchers in the field of physics and astronomy community.
It established the Achievement in Asia Award (AAA Robert T. Poe Prize) in 1993, which is presented annually to a Chinese physicist/astronomer (or a team of Physicists/astronomers) working in Asia who has (have) made outstanding contributions in physics or astronomy.
The other winner of the 2021 Achievement in Asia Award (AAA Robert T. Poe Prize) was Professor Chao-Yang LU of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC).
Other recipients to have won the award include founding President of SUSTech and Academician Qingshi ZHU (1994), Acting Vice President of SUSTech and Academician Xueming YANG (2001-2002), and Chair Professor Baowen LI (2005).
