The 2022 Future Science Prize Award Ceremony was recently held simultaneously in Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shenzhen.

The Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) hosted the ceremony in Shenzhen, which was attended by representatives of the Future Science Prize Council, renowned academics, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders. The event was jointly organized by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and SUSTech.

Professor Xueming YANG, Vice President of SUSTech and Dean of the College of Science, won the Future Science Prize in physical sciences for his research and development of new-generation molecular beam techniques with high resolution and sensitivity for state-resolved reaction dynamics studies, revealing quantum resonances and geometric phase effects in chemical reactions.

Among the guests attending the ceremony in a hybrid format included Harry Heung Yeung SHUM, Rotating Chair and Council of the 2022 Future Forum, David Feng YU, Rotating Chair of the 2022 Future Science Prize Donor’s Congress, Yufeng DONG, Professor at Fudan University, Xiaodong WANG, Director and Investigator of the National Institute of Biological Sciences, Beijing, Cathy WU, Initiator and Secretary General of the Future Forum, Xiang ZHANG, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, and Qikun XUE, President of SUSTech and winner of the physical science prize in 2016.

In his speech, Harry Heung Yeung SHUM congratulated Xueming YANG and the other winners of the 2022 Future Science Prize.

He said that their outstanding achievements and important breakthrough represent the highest level of scientific research and technologies in the world. He added that not only has it contributed to the country’s scientific development and society, but it has also addressed the great challenges faced by humanity.

On behalf of SUSTech, President Qikun XUE congratulated Xueming YANG for receiving the Future Science Prize. He added that he hoped more people would pursue and dedicate themselves to science, enhance the country’s development through science and education, and promote the progress of humanity.

As a young university, SUSTech aims to be creative and innovative, encourage interdisciplinary research cooperation, support the growth and development of young scientists, and contribute to the country’s high-level scientific and technological self-reliance.

Xueming YANG also delivered an acceptance speech at the ceremony. He said that as a scientist, he has been very fortunate for the unprecedented opportunities provided by the country to pursue his scientific dreams, and provided an important foundation for the development of basic science.

Looking back on his academic studies and scientific research journey, he paid homage to all the faculty members and friends who encouraged and cared for him along the way. He acknowledged the national ministries and various academic institutions for their strong support in carrying out cutting-edge research in chemical kinetics, and his family’s unfaltering love and support.

The winners of the 2022 Future Science Prize were officially announced in August, with Xueming YANG winning the Future Science Prize in physical sciences, alongside Wenhui LI, a professor at Tsinghua University, receiving the Future Science Prize in life sciences, and Ngaiming Mok, a professor at HKU, receiving the Future Science Prize in mathematics and computer science.
