To encourage Chinese learning and promote the understanding of classical Chinese literature, the Department of Education of Guangdong Province and Guangdong Language Commission organized the 2023 Guangdong Classical Chinese Literature Reading Competition.

The contest required participants to record a three to six-minute video reading a Chinese poem or piece of literature in Mandarin.

The Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) Language Commission organized the competition and selected four videos within the University. International student Hao Yang TAN won the 3^rd Prize among the international student group.

Hao Yang TAN chose a Chinese poem called The Last Minute, written by Xiaoyu LI. It is a passionate poem that describes the exciting historic moment of the Return of Hong Kong.

Dr. Wenhui ZHU from the Center for Language Education (CLE) and Mr. Tao JI from the Center for the Arts at SUSTech offered suggestions and support during the preparation. Hao Yang TAN showed his excellent language skills and passion in the video.

“I was interested in reading when I was a child. This is the first time that I have participated in a reading competition. I feel so lucky to win the 3^rd Prize. I really appreciate SUSTech for giving me this opportunity, and if it weren’t for Dr. Wenhui ZHU and Mr. Tao JI’s help, I wouldn’t have won”, Hao Yang TAN said.
