The Ocean Exploration – The 3rd “Ocean Exploration”–Themed Photography Contest and Marine Environment Protection Salon were recently held at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech).

The event was organized by the Department of Ocean Science and Engineering (OSE), with close to 300 photographic works being displayed.

Xiaoming SHEN, Liberian of the Shenzhen Dapeng Peninsula Maritime Library, representatives of enterprises, and heads of related departments at the University participated in the event.

Henian E, Curator of the University Library, presided over the exhibition.

In the ocean-themed photography contest, five first prizes, ten second prizes, and twenty third prizes were selected.

All of the works were put on display in Yidan Library to familiarize more people with marine knowledge, convey the concept of environmental protection, and attract more people to pay attention to marine environment protection activities.

“This is not just a regular awards ceremony and exhibition event, but also a grand event to brainstorm and jointly call for marine protection. Let us work together to protect our oceans”, said E Henian, hoping that through this event, more people would get involved in protecting the oceans.

Ruhan YANG, a third-year student of SUSTech, won the first and third prizes in the contest.

“I have participated in two field trips organized by the Department of OSE. I have learned much about marine microorganisms and other popular science, making me very interested in marine-related activities. This type of photography context can allow more people to intuitively experience the magnificence and charm of the ocean, thereby inspiring more people to protect our oceans and natural ecology”, said Ruhan YANG.

In the marine environment protection salon, experts from academia, industry, and volunteer associations gathered together to hold in-depth discussions and exchanges on topics such as marine food and marine protection, helping faculty members and students to better understand the ocean and the importance of the ocean to the earth’s ecosystem and human life.

Youmin ZHOU, Associate Professor of the Department of OSE, noted that by gathering experts, entrepreneurs, and social environmentalists to discuss topics such as how to protect the ocean and reduce marine pollution, it can popularize marine protection knowledge from different perspectives to the public and call on more people to participate in environmental protection activities.

The Department of OSE will continue to participate in more activities to urge more people to protect the marine environment and contribute to Shenzhen’s efforts to build an international ocean city.
