On April 11, Tsou Tsung-Ping, the sole granddaughter of Li Siguang (J.S. Lee) and Special Assistant and Advisor to the Director of the J.S. Lee Memorial Hall, was a distinguished guest of the SUSTech Lecture Series. She shared the life stories of three eminent scientists, Li Siguang, Li Lin, and Chen-Lu Tsou (Zou Chenglu), emphasizing their invaluable contributions to the advancement of Chinese science.

In attendance were Ling ZHANG, University Council Vice-Chairperson, and over 200 faculty members and students. The event, hosted by Dejun WANG, Director of the Political Education and Research Center, captivated the audience with its insightful discourse.

Throughout her lecture, Tsou Tsung-Ping artfully described the study, academic pursuits, and scientific explorations of three scientists: Li Siguang, his daughter Li Lin, and her husband Chen-Lu Tsou. Their stories of lifelong dedication to scientific research inspired the audience to aspire toward excellence in science and technology.

“My grandfather’s tenure at Peking University was marked not only by a commitment to teaching and research but also by the continuous focus on and support for the development of geology in China”, Ms. Tsou elaborated.

“Together with several senior geological experts, he spearheaded the establishment of the Geological Society of China, a pivotal initiative that propelled the nation’s geological sciences forward. Even in the face of illness, he persisted in his work, unwavering in his commitment to continue earthquake prediction until his final moments”.

Encouraging the students to learn from the scientific spirit of the three scientists, Tsou Tsung-Ping urged them to strive for academic excellence in seeking knowledge. “For these individuals, scientific research was not merely a facet of life; it was life itself”, she remarked. “They toiled tirelessly until their final breaths, unwavering in their commitment. My hope is that the students gathered here today will likewise dedicate themselves to the service of our country”.

In the interactive Q&A session, Ms. Tsou answered questions from the audience, leaving a lasting impression on attendees, who expressed deep appreciation for the dedication of these three scientists.

Following the lecture, Ling ZHANG presented Ms. Tsou with a commemorative certificate, acknowledging her invaluable contribution to the SUSTech Lecture Series.
