From May 22 to 26, the 2024 Guangdong Provincial University Taekwondo Championships took place at the Shenzhen Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), which attracted more than 1,100 athletes from 71 university teams across the province.
The Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) taekwondo team, led by Lunhong DONG, Director of the Sports Center, and coaches Yang ZHAO, Yang LU, Bo BAI, and Fei ZHAO, comprised of 21 athletes who delivered outstanding performances.
The team secured first place in the Group A Poomsae and the team competition, marking another significant achievement at the provincial championships.
In the individual events, Jiewen MO clinched first place in the women’s 52kg weight class and received the best technical award in the women’s competition in Group A. Qizhen WANG took first place in the men’s +78kg weight class.
Yunhao LI and Jingwen HUANG earned second place in the men’s 74kg and 78kg weight classes, respectively. Zihao LI and Boyuan LI both secured third place in the men’s 57kg and 74kg weight classes, respectively. Yushan WEI finished third in the women’s 66kg weight class, while Yida DONG and Yiqi ZHANG both placed fifth in the men’s 63kg and 78kg weight classes, respectively.
In the group events, Jiewen MO and Yida DONG won first place in the poomsae mixed pairs, while Yida DONG, Boyuan LI, and Jiazhi SUN finished fourth in the men’s team poomsae.
To prepare for the competition, the SUSTech taekwondo team underwent two months of intensive training, supplementing their regular regimen. They visited various universities and institutions in Shenzhen, including Shenzhen Polytechnic University, to exchange ideas and gain practical experience.
Additionally, taekwondo teams from SYSU, Guangdong University of Technology, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, and Guangzhou Panyu Vocational and Technical College visited SUSTech for exchanges, enhancing both competitive experience and inter-university camaraderie.
The Guangdong Provincial University Taekwondo Championships highlighted the competitive spirit of SUSTech students and laid a strong foundation for the continued development of the taekwondo team. It also invigorated the promotion and growth of taekwondo on campus.
The competition featured three categories and was divided into four groups according to the type of university or college and the students’ majors: Group A, Group BA, Group BB, and Group C.
