From June 27 to June 30, the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) hosted the 11th International Conference on Environmental and Engineering Geophysics (ICEEG2024).

The conference centered on the themes of engineering geophysics, environmental geophysics, and intelligent geophysical technology, aiming to address environmental and engineering challenges through geophysical methods. Over 260 scholars and researchers from around the world participated in the event.

Attendees had the opportunity to explore the latest advancements in near-surface geophysical technology and discuss applications in urban areas, disaster management, hydrology, environmental studies, and engineering surveys. New methods and technologies in optical fiber, artificial intelligence, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were also highlighted.

Ten renowned scholars from Asia, America, and Europe delivered keynote speeches, while 16 young researchers presented special reports. Distinguished speakers included Laura Valentina Socco, President of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) and Professor at the Polytechnic University of Turin; Xiaofei Chen, Head of the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at SUSTech; and Jianghai Xia, Distinguished Professor at Zhejiang University, spoke about the direction of surface wave detection.

Other invited speakers were Jigen TANG, Chair Professor of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at SUSTech; Gang YU, Professor and Distinguished Expert of BGP Inc., CNPC; Juzhi DENG, Vice President of East China University of Technology; Zhihong FU, Director of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Chongqing University; Guangyou FANG, Director of the Aerospace Information Research Institute at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (AIRCAS); Jing LI, Professor at Jilin University; and Yan ZHENG, Chair Professor of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering at SUSTech. Their topics ranged from archaeology and fiber optic sensing to UAV applications, near-surface instruments, seismic simulation, and water resources.

The conference featured special sessions on 12 topics, selected 23 outstanding student papers, and recognized 18 outstanding early-career researcher presentations. There were 83 oral and 75 poster presentations; ten organizations and manufacturers exhibited their latest technological achievements and new geophysical instruments, equipment, and software.

ICEEG, an international event held every two years in the field of geophysics, was co-organized by SUSTech and the Near Surface Geophysics Committee of the Chinese Geophysical Society (CGS).
