The finals of the 12th National University Student Optoelectronic Design Competition “Xizhi Cup” recently took place in Xi’an.

Two teams from the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), comprising of undergraduate students Chaoran MIAO, Wenzhen ZHONG, Haowen ZHENG, Yinda HE, Chongyang LI, and Yefan WANG, secured the national second prize. Additionally, Liyang SHAO and Shuming CHEN were honored as “Excellent Instructors” in the Southeast division of the competition.

This year’s competition reached a new milestone with the participation of 392 universities, 4,044 teams, and 15,309 participants from seven regions across China: North, Northeast, Northwest, Southwest, Central, Southeast, and East China.

Six undergraduate students from SUSTech’s Department of EEE, under the guidance of faculty members Liyang SHAO, Shuming CHEN, and Linlin XU, achieved excellent results in the competition’s creative track.

Following their success in the regional division, two teams advanced to the national finals, winning the second prize in the competition. Additionally, three more teams, featuring students Zheng LI, Jiaying ZHU, Wenzhi YAN, Qiang LI, Jue WANG, Hongzhi LU, Linyuan YANG, and Zhiliang TANG, won second and third prizes in the Southeast division.

Chaoran MIAO’s team came up with an idea of developing an intelligent optical network operation and maintenance platform based on existing communication optical cables under the guidance of Prof. Liyang SHAO and his graduate students. Their design targets four key application scenarios: anti-breaking, anti-intrusion, anti-leakage, and anti-vibration, integrating synaesthesia computing for optical network management.

Meanwhile, Yinda HE’s team developed an innovative QLED lighting system for eye protection, which operates directly on AC power without traditional drive circuits, significantly reducing costs.  This innovation addresses issues prevalent in conventional LED lighting, such as blue light exposure, glare from point light sources, and inefficiencies in AC driving.

The National University Student Optoelectronic Design Competition is one of China’s most prestigious events in the field of optoelectronics, offering a platform for students to showcase their skills and foster connections between academia, research, and industry in optoelectronics.
