The 16th IEEE International Conference on Wireless Communications and Signal Processing (WCSP 2024) recently took place in Hefei, Anhui Province.

The paper entitled “Channel Estimation for XL-IRS Assisted Wireless Systems with Double-sided Visibility Regions”, received the Best Paper Award at the conference. The first author is Chao ZHOU, a Ph.D. student supervised by Dr. Changsheng YOU and Professor Yi GONG from the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech).

This paper addresses the challenge of channel estimation in extremely large-scale intelligent reflecting surface (XL-IRS) systems. Exploring the unique spatial characteristics of near-field channels in XL-IRS environments, the authors developed an efficient three-stage channel estimation scheme. Their findings demonstrate that the visibility region on the base station side can effectively reduce pilot overhead in channel estimation and enhance estimation accuracy.

The IEEE WCSP is an international conference hosted by the IEEE Communications Society. Recognized as one of the largest and most influential academic conferences in wireless communications and signal processing, it attracts researchers from around the world to discuss advances in theoretical, experimental, and applied aspects of these fields.

This year, the conference received 641 submissions, with 254 papers accepted and 11 receiving Best Paper Awards from the award committee.
