The Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) recently concluded its 2024 undergraduate enrollment work, with a total of 1,350 students from 24 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions, including Guangdong, Shandong, and Beijing. Additionally, ten new students were admitted through the Joint Entrance Examination to Chinese Universities for Overseas Chinese Students and Students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

Since the beginning of this year, Hong JIANG, University Council Chairperson, has led a team to visit provinces such as Guangdong, Shaanxi, Henan, and Hunan to assist in SUSTech’s admission work.

Qikun XUE, President of SUSTech; Hongwei FANG, Vice President and Provost; and heads of related departments visited the Office of Admission to review the enrollment work and present admission letters to new members from the Class of 2028.

While visiting the Office of Admission, President Qikun XUE inquired about the rules and procedures of the admissions process, emphasizing the importance of conducting the process with thoroughness, accuracy, and fairness.

President XUE held discussions with student representatives, sharing his academic experiences and encouraging them to develop and grow during their time at the University.

He highlighted that SUSTech, as a new research university, benefits from strong support from the national, provincial, and municipal governments and boasts significant advantages in talent cultivation, scientific innovation, infrastructure, and campus development. He encouraged the students to embody the University’s motto, “Virtue, Truth, Advance”, and make the most of their four years at SUSTech.

Afterward, President XUE presented admission letters to the eight freshmen representatives.

Siyou WANG, a graduate from Shenzhen Middle School, won the silver medal in the 2023 National High School Biology Competition. It was in this competition that he developed a connection with SUSTech when he received guidance from one of the University’s seniors.

His passion for computational neuroscience led him to choose SUSTech over other universities. After learning about the University’s support for undergraduate research and engaging with faculty members, he was determined to apply to SUSTech. He shared that he plans to focus on foundational general education courses while preparing to pursue a computational neuroscience-related major in his second year. He also hopes to meet and connect with other like-minded students.

The other freshmen representatives were all from the High School Affiliated to SUSTech (HSAS).

This year, the overall quality of undergraduate admissions at SUSTech has continued to rise, with over 60,000 applicants for the first time. A record of 21,000 candidates advanced to the ability test, the highest number in history. A total of 1,360 students were admitted, 30 more than last year, an increase of 2.3%.

This year, SUSTech admitted 60 students into Sino-foreign joint degree programs (biomedical sciences and biomedical engineering) for the first time, and a further ten through the Joint Entrance Examination to Chinese Universities for Overseas Chinese Students and Students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

The University enrolled 147 students from Shenzhen, accounting for 45.5% coming from Guangdong Province. In addition, Guangzhou accounted for 79 students and Foshan for 32 students, the regions with more new students from Guangdong Province outside of Shenzhen.

SUSTech has followed a comprehensive evaluation and admission model for 13 consecutive years based on students’ college entrance examination scores, high school performance, and independent college test scores.

At present, the admission letters for 24 provinces, as well as for overseas Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, have been sent out. This year’s admission letters are presented in a square wooden box, continuing an orange-colored theme from previous years, with a torch design on the box’s exterior. The torch incorporates thermochromic ink, allowing its orange flame to shimmer with golden brilliance when touched, signifying the bright future that awaits the new SUSTechers.

The box contains the admission letter, an enrollment guide, a torch-shaped candle, bookmarks showcasing research achievements, the University’s emblem, and other accessories.
