Clarivate Analytics unveiled its latest Essential Science Indicators (ESI) dataset on May 8, with three disciplines from the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech)—Mathematics, Pharmacology & Toxicology, and Agricultural Sciences—ranking among the global top 1% for the first time.
This brings the University’s total to 17 disciplines in the global top 1%, including three that have reached the top 1‰.

The latest ESI rankings cover the period from January 2015 to February 2025. During this time, SUSTech’s Mathematics discipline ranks in the top 0.984% worldwide, with 804 SCI-indexed publications and 5,085 total citations. Pharmacology & Toxicology ranks in the top 0.935%, with 369 publications and 4,225 citations, while Agricultural Sciences ranks in the top 0.965%, with 150 publications and 3,583 citations.
Based on the Web of Science Core Collection, ESI is a widely recognized analytical tool that evaluates publication and citation performance across more than 12,000 SCI/SSCI-indexed journals over a rolling 10-year period. It identifies top-performing authors, institutions, countries, and journals in 22 broad fields based on publication and citation performance, serving as an important indicator for evaluating the international academic level and influence of academic institutions and universities.
