On May 20, the unveiling ceremony of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) Affiliated Foshan Hospital took place at the First People’s Hospital of Foshan.

The event brought together Xi WEN, Vice Mayor of the Foshan Municipal People’s Government; Hong JIANG, University Council Chairperson of SUSTech; and Songling WANG, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), as well as officials from the Foshan government, the First People’s Hospital of Foshan, and the School of Medicine at SUSTech.

Vice Mayor Xi WEN hailed the hospital’s official launch as a major milestone in the development of Foshan’s healthcare and a strong example of university-local collaboration supporting the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

She emphasized that this partnership—combining SUSTech’s strengths in scientific research and innovation with the clinical expertise of the First People’s Hospital of Foshan—will inject fresh momentum into regional medical education, research, and the application of advanced medical technologies.

Vice Mayor WEN noted that the municipal government will continue to provide strong policy support and resource allocation to deepen integration across industry, academia, and research, laying a solid foundation for building a healthier Foshan and the high-quality development of the GBA.

Chairperson Hong JIANG underscored the significance of the collaboration between SUSTech and the First People’s Hospital of Foshan, noting its alignment with the national “Healthy China” action plan and its role in elevating healthcare standards across the GBA.

In recent years, SUSTech has made notable strides in medicine, accelerating the development of medical disciplines and committing to cultivating high-quality medical talents. Chairperson JIANG expressed that this partnership would enable both sides to fully leverage their respective strengths, share resources, and build a joint platform that integrates medical education and clinical practice, ultimately delivering high-quality healthcare services to the public.

Jun JIANG, President of the First People’s Hospital of Foshan, described the affiliation as a key step in advancing the hospital’s integration of medicine, education, and research. As a century-old institution, the hospital is entering a new chapter of growth.

He emphasized that by leveraging SUSTech’s scientific capabilities and academic resources, the hospital would further align frontline clinical care with cutting-edge research. President JIANG expressed optimism that the newly named SUSTech Affiliated Foshan Hospital would achieve breakthroughs in medical services, research innovation, and talent training, further contributing to the region’s high-quality healthcare development.

During the unveiling ceremony, the First People’s Hospital of Foshan officially received its new designation as the SUSTech Affiliated Foshan Hospital. The two parties also signed a key scientific research collaboration agreement.
