On the afternoon of December 8, 2025, a distinguished delegation from the University of Galway, Ireland, visited the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), marking a significant step toward strengthening international academic ties and fostering future collaboration.
The delegation, led by Professor Alma McCarthy, was warmly received by Professor Li JIN, Vice President of SUSTech, along with faculty representatives and staff. The meeting served as a platform for in-depth discussions on potential partnership areas and shared strategic interests.
In his opening remarks, Professor Li JIN extended a sincere welcome to the guests. “We are truly delighted to host our distinguished colleagues from the University of Galway here in Shenzhen,” said Professor JIN. “Today’s meeting opens a new chapter in our relationship and brings exciting opportunities for meaningful collaboration.”
He highlighted SUSTech’s commitment to innovation, open exchange, and global engagement, and emphasized the strong potential for synergy between the two institutions.
The University of Galway, a globally recognized university with strengths in business, biomedical science, engineering, and humanities, shares SUSTech’s vision for research excellence and societal impact.
Professor Alma McCarthy, Executive Dean of the College of Business, Public Policy and Law of the University of Galway, acknowledged the warm reception and shared an overview of the University of Galway, highlighting its history, international outlook, and strengths in areas including business information systems, health economics, data analytics, and medical technology. She noted Ireland’s unique position as the only English-speaking country in the EU and emphasized the university’s openness to deepening collaboration with Chinese institutions.
The delegation from Galway expressed particular interest in SUSTech’s rapid development, industry connections in Shenzhen, and innovative approach to talent development. Both parties agreed to work toward a formal cooperation framework in the coming months to facilitate joint projects, mobility programs, and research partnerships. Prof. He WANG, Assistant Dean of the College of Business; Prof. Zhaoyuan MA, from the School of Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing & College of Business; and Dr. Hao CHEN, Executive Deputy Director of SUSTech Global, participated in the discussions.
