The 2026 Guangdong University Student Xiangqi Championship concluded in Zhuhai. The Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) Xiangqi team won the team championship and achieved an outstanding result of one silver and one bronze in individual events, marking a historic breakthrough for SUSTech’s Xiangqi team in this competition.

This competition was organized by the Guangdong Student Sports and Arts Federation. SUSTech’s Xiangqi team was led by Lunhong DONG from the Sports Center, with Siyu HOU and Yipin ZHAO serving as coaches. The team consisted of nine student players selected from various colleges: Jiahong LIU, Hanyuan ZHANG, Zhihan ZHANG, and Yabing WANG from Shuli College; Junru ZHAO from Zhicheng College; Haoyu WU, Dan ZHU, and Junyan LU from Zhixin College; and Shangyang LI, a doctoral student from the College of Science. They competed in the three-day event.

On the competition floor, SUSTech’s Xiangqi team members stayed composed and devised careful strategies. Haoyu WU won the silver medal in the men’s individual category, Junru ZHAO placed fourth in the men’s individual category, Shangyang LI placed fifth in the men’s individual category, and Junyan LU won the bronze medal in the women’s individual category.

SUSTech’s Chess teams have achieved remarkable results in recent years. SUSTech’s Weiqi team, with its strong skills, won third place in the team event at the 2023 “Four Seas Cup” Hong Kong International University Student Weiqi Competition. The captain of SUSTech’s chess team, Junwei XU, won the runner-up in the 2025 National University Chess Championship and the individual championship in the 2026 National Chess Association Master Tournament, successfully making it to the national training team to participate in the Asian Continental Chess Championship, showcasing the outstanding talents of SUSTech students on the international stage.
