Dr. Marcela Del Carmen, President of Massachusetts General Hospital and Executive Vice President of Mass General Brigham, led a delegation to visit the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). Qikun XUE, President of SUSTech and an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, alongside SUSTech’s representatives, had a discussion and exchange with the guests.

President Qikun XUE extended a warm welcome to President Marcela Del Carmen and the delegation. He noted that SUSTech is a new type of research-oriented university established as part of China’s reform and development of higher education, with a high starting point and a high-level positioning. President XUE also noted that a number of SUSTech professors and scholars have conducted postdoctoral research at Massachusetts General Hospital. He expressed the hope that the visit would serve as an opportunity to deepen exchanges in the areas of advanced medical education, innovation and research, as well as the cultivation of international oriented interdisciplinary talents. SUSTech welcomes opportunities to work with leading international healthcare institutions, contributing to global public health and human well-being.

Marcela Del Carmen gave high praise to the rapid and high-quality development at SUSTech. She addressed that improving and uplift medical services requires continued innovation in cutting-edge technologies and their clinical application, as well as ongoing improvements in approaches to diagnosis and treatment to enhance the patient experience. She expressed the hope that the visit would foster continued academic exchange and mutual learning, with opportunities to share perspectives on healthcare quality, medical education, research, and ways to contribute to the health and well-being of local communities.
