The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) announced the list of Fellows and College Members for 2026. Max Qing-Hu MENG, Academician of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (Academy of Science). Among the new fellows in 2026, Max Qing-Hu MENG is the only scholar from a Mainland Chinese university to be elected.

Max Qing-Hu MENG is a Chair Professor and Head of the EE Department at SUSTech, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and IEEE. Formerly a tenured professor at the University of Alberta in Canada and Head of the EE Department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He specializes in robotics perception and intelligence. Ranked in the global top 2% of scientists by Stanford, he has published over 1,000 papers, holds 100+ patents, and won 30+ awards, including the IROS Harashima Award. He has led 60+ research projects (¥100M+) to completion, delivered 200+ plenary talks, and serves as editor for leading journals, including founding Editor-in-Chief of Biomimetic Intelligence and Robotics published by Elsevier. He was the General Chair of the flagship conferences in robotics and automation: IEEE/RSJ IROS 2005 and IEEE ICRA 2021.

Professor MENG has long been engaged in research on robot perception and intelligence, intelligent control and human-machine interaction, medical surgery and nursing robots, intelligent service robots, micro-robots, and medical devices. The Royal Society of Canada notes that Professor MENG is a pioneering leader in the field of medical robotics, with original research covering fundamental control algorithms, robotic prosthetics, robotic capsule endoscopes, and orthopedic surgical robots, with the related orthopedic surgical robots having been used in over 5,000 clinical surgeries.

Founded in 1882, the Royal Society of Canada is the oldest national academic institution in Canada. Its fellows come from the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, nominated and elected by peers, representing the highest academic honor in Canada.
