The International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) officially announced the new list of IAPR Fellows, and Shiqi YU, an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), has been selected. 

The IAPR is a globally influential academic organization in the field of pattern recognition. The IAPR Fellow Award was established in 1994 and serves as a prestigious recognition conferred by IAPR upon outstanding scholars in the field. This honor is awarded biennially and mainly recognizes top researchers who have made distinguished scientific contributions to the field of pattern recognition and services to IAPR. The number of newly selected Fellows in each session cannot exceed 0.25% of the total IAPR membership.

Shiqi YU was selected as an IAPR Fellow for “foundational contributions to gait recognition through the development of influential datasets and approaches, and for service to the IAPR through its Technical Committees and conferences.”

Shiqi YU’s main research focuses on gait recognition and visual object detection. In gait recognition, the CASIA-B gait database he created is now widely used as a benchmark in the field, and the OpenGait open-source project has become a major framework for algorithm evaluation in gait recognition. In object detection, the face detection algorithms he developed have been adopted by multiple companies. So far, he has published over 100 papers in top academic journals and conferences, including IEEE TPAMI, IEEE TIFS, IEEE TBIOM, PR, CVPR, AAAI, ECCV, and IJCB. Since 2021, he has been continuously listed in the “Single-year” category of the “World’s Top 2% Scientists” list, and was nominated to its “Career” category in 2025.
