The American Physical Society (APS) announced the list of new APS Fellows for 2026. Hai-Zhou LU, Chair Professor in the Department of Physics at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and Research Director of the State Key Laboratory of Quantum Functional Materials, was selected.

Professor LU specializes in theoretical condensed matter physics, with a long-standing focus on quantum transport and spacetime geometry in condensed matter. Together with his collaborators, he has developed the quantum transport theory of topological insulator thin films, proposed the “Fermi arc–wormhole tunneling” mechanism for the three-dimensional quantum Hall effect, developed the disorder and geometry theory of nonlinear transport and nonlinear magnetization, and advanced the theory of purely electrical detection and manipulation of unconventional magnetism.
According to the APS, Hai-Zhou LU was elected “for his pioneering contributions to the theories of quantum transport in topological matter and related physical properties, including emergent quantum Hall effects, magneto-transport in topological matter, and quantum transport in unconventional magnets.”
Founded in 1899, the APS is one of the most prestigious physics societies in the world and currently has more than 50,000 members globally. Its Fellowship program began in 1921, with no more than 0.5% of the Society’s membership elected as Fellows each year, recognizing their significant innovative contributions to advancing original physics research, applying physics to science and technology, and excelling in physics education and leadership.
