The 31st Chinese Chemistry Olympiad and Winter Camp successfully concluded

On the afternoon of November 28, 2017, the 31st Chinese Chemistry Olympiad and Winter Camp came to an end in Pingshan, Shenzhen. This event handed out a total of 104 gold medals, 136 silver medals and 100 bronze medals.

SUSTech President Chen Shiyi, vice president of the Chinese Chemistry Society, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Tsinghua University Professor Zhang Xi, Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress Vice Chairman and Chairman of Shenzhen Association for Science and Technology Jiang Yuyang attended the closing ceremony and was handed out the awards. A magnificent zither performance kicked off the closing ceremony.

President Chen congratulated the winning students on behalf of SUSTech, pointing out that chemistry was one of the leading disciplines in the 21st century, and will play a crucial role in the areas of life sciences, materials science and environmental science.

Zhang Xi followed on behalf of the Chinese Chemical Society and thanked the Shenzhen Association of Science and Technology, the Shenzhen Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and SUSTech for the great collective efforts and contributions made during the winter camp. He pointed out that chemistry is a subject full of beauty and creation and needs a broad field of vision.

Jiang Yuyang then gave a speech in which he said that Shenzhen is a young city and the Shenzhen Association for Science and Technology will make the most of this opportunity to host the Chinese Chemistry Olympiad to give full play to its role as a scientific organization in carrying out high-level academic exchanges and promoting adolescent’s scientific quality.

The students were awarded 104 gold medals, 136 silver medals, 100 bronze medals.

SUSTech’s Arts Center presented performances from the SUSTech Choir and Symphony Orchestra as well as student singers to the delight of the audience.

Lastly, Zhang Xi announced that Shandong Normal University will host the 32nd China Chemistry Olympiad and Winter Camp next year, and conducted the ceremonial flag handover.

Zhang Li, Party Secretary and Vice Chairman of the Shenzhen Science and Technology Association, Sun Xinhua, Director of Shenzhen Pingshan District People’s Congress, Zhang Xumu, Chair of the Department of Chemistry of SUSTech, Duan Muyun, Professor of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering at Peking University and member of the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Society as well as other important guests were present for the closing ceremony.

During the one-week event, SUSTech was fully committed to the competition and to providing students with high standards, advanced experimental test sites and personalized logistic services. Leaders and staff involved in the preparations as well as student volunteers toiled endlessly to ensure that the event was a success, as well as the Shenzhen Science and Technology Association, who is also preparing the Shenzhen Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Industry Conference.
