On September 16, 2015, Professor Dinshaw J. Patel, a famous international structural biologist and a member of American Academy of Science and American Academy of Arts and Sciences, visited SUSTC, and the President Chen Shiyi and the Vice-president Wu Chuanyue met with him.
Later on, Professor Patel made a wonderful academic report titled “Structure Biology of Immune, Gene and Epigenetic Regulation”.
On the afternoon of that day, Chen Shiyi met with Professor Patel. And then Wu Chuanyue introduced the planning and construction of SUSTC and its basic school-running situation to Professor Patel. The Professor visited library, research building, testing center and SUSTC campus under construction, and investigated the laboratory of the Department of Biology carefully.
On the afternoon report, Professor Patel represented the outstanding work in aspects of immune, gene and epigenetic regulation, etc. of his laboratory from three respects. The report was simple but profound and attractive. In the end of the report, Professor Patel interacted with teachers and students, responding to each question asked by them in detail. He also had an informal discussion with several teachers form the Department of Biology and the Department of Chemistry. Professor Patel showed that SUSTC is an innovative and efficient university with great development potential. He looked forward to further academic communicating and cooperating with SUSTC.

Professor Patel, working for American Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), is the academician of both American Academy of Science and American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has worked on the research of structural biology for a long time, and is a distinguished scholar in this field. He had acted as a professor in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics Department of Columbia University from 1984 to 1992. In 1992, he joined in MSKCC, and established the Research Department of Structural Biology, which has cultivated many famous international distinguished scientists, including Shi Yigong, a famous structural biologist in China. He has published over 400 research papers and reviews in total. Since 2003, many of his research achievements have been published on top magazines like Nature, Science and Cell each year. In 2009, he was elected as the academician of American Academy of Science, and the academician of American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2014.
