Chen Zibing | 02/01/2018

Recently, the discipline of Mechanics in the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering at SUSTech was granted the 2017 Guangdong Peak-Climbing key discipline by the Education Department of Guangdong Province, reflecting yet another departmental breakthrough.

There are four major types of Guangdong Province key disciplines: Peak-Climbing key disciplines, preponderant key disciplines, special key disciplines, and cultivation key disciplines. In 2017, 30 key disciplines were granted, including seven Peak-Climbing key disciplines. The Peak-Climbing key discipline is the leading discipline in the province, with the potential to become a national key discipline. Mechanics is the third Peak-Climbing key disciplines at SUSTech, after chemistry and physics.

The requirement to be one of the key disciplines in Guangdong Province is that the university shall take the lead in coordinating with top universities, both at home and abroad, and local governments to jointly build key disciplines, connecting closely to a modern industrial system, while promoting local economic and social development.

The Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering will collaborate with the Shenzhen government and Peking University to further enhance the key discipline. Peking University will support the Department with its rich experience with faculty members, teaching support and research.

Since the founding of the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering, it has attached great importance to the development of Mechanics. The approval of the Guangdong Peak-Climbing key discipline encourages the department to strengthen its capacity in research and teaching further. It is committed to developing the top-tier mechanical engineering faculty in the world.
