On March 30th , 2018, the Xie Xide Chair Professor Jin Xiaofeng from Fudan University’s Department of Physics visited SUSTech to give a fascinating lecture on the topic of “Poetry and Art in Physics.”

Jin Xiaofeng’s research is mostly on surface and magnetic ultrathin film, and low-dimensional system research. He has won the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Outstanding Young Scholar Award Laureates . He is also a Distinguished Professor for Chang Jiang Scholars Program and has received Hu Gangfu Prize in Physics among his many other awards.

Jin Xiaofeng started the lecture with ancient poetry and murals. He introduced Kepler’s laws, Law of universial gravitation, and Galileo’s gravitational acceleration from the perspective of art. At the same time, he emphasized the difference between science and art regarding subjectivity and objectiveness.

He believes science is “subjective to the individual, objective of everyone else.” Jin Xiaofeng’s wonderful report has aroused everyone’s interest. At the end of the lecture, he also recommended the book “A Brief History of Humankind” for everyone.
