Chris Edwards | 05/04/2018

On Friday, April 27, Chinese Academy of Sciences Academician Tang Benzhong graced SUSTech to lecture on the topic of “The Trilogy of Innovation Research.” Students and faculty packed out the lecture hall to hear Tang speak, given the importance of the topic to SUSTech’s culture.

Professor Tang pointed out that doing research satisfies curiosity, requires dedication & gives a sense of accomplishment and honor. The core of scientific research lies in the source of innovation, and the “trilogy of innovation research” includes discovering new phenomena and problems, putting forward new problems and models, and developing new applications and fields. Tang then elaborated on the connotations of the “trilogy of innovation research,” by showing examples of aggregation induced emissions (AIE), intramolecular motion limitation (RIM), and other high-tech materials.

Professor Tang Benzhong’s research focuses include macromolecular chemistry, materials science, and biomedical theranostics. He is currently commanding research into aggregation induced emissions and is the Director of the SUSTech-HKUST Joint Laboratory. He is also the Chief Scientist for the National Key Basic Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, focusing on the basic scientific problem of inducing luminescence.
