SUSTech organized a pre-application workshop for 2018 National Natural Science Foundation of China’s (NSFC) funding application on the 4th January, 2018, in order to help SUSTech researchers apply for funds.

President Chen Shiyi, Vice President for Research Tang Tao and 200 other faculty members participated in the meeting held by Zhao Yusheng, the Director of the Scientific Research Office.

The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) is an organization directly affiliated to the State Council for the management of the National Natural Science Fund.

SUSTech values highly the irreplaceable role that the NSFC plays in building the university into a top-notch research university, with world-class disciplines, high level talents and cutting-edge research opportunities. Each year, the Scientific Research Office and all the departments at SUSTech will set targets in advance, and the Office will assist the research teams for major programs to apply for extensive research funding in all academic disciplines.

SUSTech has done remarkable work regarding general program funding in 2017. Chen encouraged the scientific researchers to attempt the application in inter-disciplinary fields, trans-regional and trans-national united funds, major research programs and international cooperation. He suggested the young scientific researchers proactively communicate and interact with other Chinese experts, and aim to stand out in the competition of talent programs.

Vice President Tang then followed to share his experiences in applying for the national natural science fund as a judge. He talked about the selection of discipline codes, project names, abstracts, bases of project establishment, research content and objectives, innovation, research basis and details of the application form, and elaborated key techniques, writing skills and matters which need attention. His professional guidance on the topic of how young scientific researchers can increase their competitiveness and maximally display their academic achievements was well received by the audience.

Professor Chen Xiaofei, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, then introduced how to systematically write a high-quality application in topic selections, writing methods and skills and how to gain the trust of the review experts.

Later on, Gong Yi, Deputy Director of the Scientific Research Office, summarized the application and subsidization processes of natural science funding for SUSTech in 2017, and analyzed thoroughly the application data and composition of SUSTech in the past 5 years to make specific arrangements for natural science fund applications in 2018.

Scientific Research Office staff Su Fen,, a former senior funding program director from Tsinghua University, then introduced the application and subsidization situations of the NSFC in 2017, as well as the changes and key issues of the fund application policy in 2018.

Finally, Director Zhao made a summary statement with respect to a greater prosperity of application work in 2018.
