On April 27th 2015, by Dr. Zongxiang of Chemistry Department, Dr. Roy Velaisamy from the City University of Hong Kong was invited to visit SUSTC and give a wonderful lecture entitled “Plastic memories for data storage”.

Dr. Roy’s research interests were focused on the study of molecular materials for electronic device since his post-doctoral research with Dr.Michele Muccini at ISMN, CNR.Currently, he is running the project related to fabrication of functional self-assembly materials for electronic devices application and integration of such devices for printed electronics and energy harvesting in City U. He initiated his lecture with the basic concept of the plastic flash memory and the superiority of floating gate flash memory, then he went deeper into the charge trap and transfer mechanism associated with the data storage in thefloating gate memory device. He also referred to the selection of material spacked in different layers and relative flexibility and stability of device testing.

The second section of the seminar, Dr. Roy presented the new concept of smart sensors, which are widely used for detection of food spoilage, drug, explosive substances, andcarbon dioxide. For instance, the sensor array in the amine sensor made it practical to behave like an electronic nose for amine identification and sensitive to the concentration.

His topics arouse great interests of the audiences. Prof. Liming Huang and Dr. Wei Jiang questioned about the sensibility of these smart sensors and realization mechanism of them. Besides, some students showed their enthusiasm and they noticed that Dr. Roy had done some researches about renewable energy and asked about recent progress, Roy gave satisfying replies and received overwhelming applause.
