On May 17, the MOOC Center (Massive Open Online Course Center) at SUSTech officially opened. Residential College Director Han Wei hosted the opening ceremony, whose attendees included Vice President Tang Tao and Director of Center for Higher Education Research (HERC) Li Ming.
Tang Tao expected MOOCs to play a key role to change the traditional mode of education and increase teaching efficiency. He urged policymakers to implement favorable regulations for the professors to record MOOC courses and called on university staff to expand the influence of MOOCs by participating in online course competitions.
Li Ming reported on the recording process at MOOC Center and also encouraged faculty members to contribute their knowledge by participating in MOOC projects.
Deputy Provost and Director of Teaching Affairs Office Huang Kefu was highly satisfied with the test videos at MOOC and hoped that MOOC Center would focus more on general course videos.
Department Head of Materials Science and Engineering Cheng Xin shared his experience as one of the first SUSTech professors to participate in MOOC recording sessions. He fully acknowledged the university’s efforts in combining higher education with modern communications technology and believed MOOC could solve students’ problems in their studies.
Currently, six courses are being recorded at MOOC Center. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Department of Mathematics and Center for Language Education have all contributed courses. Soon, MOOCs from the Center for Higher Education Research, Department of Physics, Department of Biology, Department of Finance, and Department of Materials Science and Engineering will also be available.
