Recently, SUSTech served as the Shenzhen Division of the 2018 Munich Re Cup Actuarial Mathematics Competition, while the Department of Finance hosted the event.
The Munich Re Cup is designed to provide university students with an opportunity to develop and apply their analytical, presentation and problem-solving skills to a real-world business problem. Participating students receive networking opportunities that will provide them with exposure to Munich Re executives and industry professionals. Since its establishment in 2011, more than 4,000 students from over 200 higher education institutions worldwide have participated in the competition, making it extremely well-known in the insurance industry.
It is estimated that the 2018 Munich Re Cup attracted 990 applicants from 19 examination districts. Due to a rapid increase in the number of applicants, this year’s competition had a new examination district – the Shenzhen Division at SUSTech. As the first examination district in Shenzhen, SUSTech welcomed its own students, as well as nearby universities such as Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Sun Yat-Sen University, Xiamen University and Huaqiao University.
SUSTech has the most participants out of all the examination venues. Other examination venues included high-profile universities such as Hong Kong University, Australian National University, the University of New South Wales, Renmin University of China, Nankai University and Central University of Finance and Economics. As a result, the Munich Re Cup may hold future competitions at SUSTech. The Finance Department will seize the opportunity to push itself to a new level – especially in the field of actuarial sciences.
