Shenzhen Special Zone Daily (Journalists: Qin Xiaoyan, Intern: Zhang Rao): Recently South University of Science and Technology of China established its College of Environmental Science and Engineering, and famous hydrogeologist Zheng Chunmiao acted as the director. 

At the interview with the journalist, Zheng Chunmiao stated that the college would borrow the models of American Stanford University and California Institute of Technology to establish an internationally first-class College of Environmental Science and Engineering, and the scientific research would focus on the most pressing environmental issues met recently, including water, atmospheric and soil pollution. Meanwhile, the College will establish two platforms – SUSTC Engineering Technology Innovation Center and Shenzhen Soil and Ground Water Pollution Key Laboratory, to realize the transformation of research findings.

“In teaching, we hope the students we trained are solid in scientific theory and excellent in practical ability.”He expressed. At present, the educational curriculum provision for undergraduates majoring in Environmental Science and Technology at home is fragmented, appearing barriers between different departments and regions, and lack of multidisciplinary crossing and integration. The teaching still focuses on the prevention and control of traditional pollution, but concerns not enough over clean, efficient energy and its recycling utilization, and involves little with newly-emerged industry, environment-friendly products and environmental protection service. Generally the Environmental Science and Engineering is set with two independent majors, which is not helpful to train versatile talents in this aspect.
