On May 2, 2015,“International Higher Education Innovation High-end Consultation and Discussion Meeting” was held in Shenzhen. This meeting was jointly held by Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government and the Commission of The People’s Republic of China for UNESCO, and undertaken by the South University of Science and Technology of China. A dozen Chinese and foreign higher education experts and scholars attended the meeting, including Commission of The People’s Republic of China for UNESCO Secretary General Mr. Yue Du, Chinese Education Society President Professor Mr. Binglin Zhong, The Open University of Hong Kong Vice-president Professor Mr. Rongan Li, and other celebrated scholars, and delivered speeches. SUSTC Secretary of the CPC Committee Mr. Ming Li attended the meeting and delivered a speech; Shenzhen Education Bureau Director General Ms. Yurong Guo also attended the meeting and delivered a speech. The meeting was presided over by SUSTC President Professor Mr. Shiyi Chen.

Experts attending the meeting delivered speeches around the theme of the international higher education innovation. Professor Rongan Li reflected on the role of university from the perspective of knowledge paradigm shift, HKU Associate Professor Linggao Ke analyzed the competition and cooperation of research universities in globalization scientific research, USYD Professor Welch compared the evolution of knowledge society in Australia, ASEAN, and China. With respect to Chinese and foreign higher education reform and development, President Binglin Zhong summed up the experience and trend of China’s higher education reform and development, HKU Professor Rui Yang took analysis to the higher education in East Asia based on culture, scholars from Thailand and Cambodia shared their countries’ present situation and challenges of higher education. Also, SUSTC Secretary of the CPC Committee Dr Ming Li summed up the practical experience of the innovative development of higher education in Shenzhen, based on the case of establishing the South University of Science and Technology of China from a high starting point, and China Development Institute Vice President Jian Qu introduced the consideration to education factor of Shenzhen in strengthening the construction of an international city. In the field of university internationalization, SHNU former President Professor Minxuan Zhang introduced the exploration of the internationalization of higher education in Shanghai, SYSU Professor Changgui Chen summarized three preferences of the internationalization of China’s colleges and universities, and CUHK Associate Professor Jun Li analyzed the practical experience of internationalization of China’s higher education based on the case of Confucius institute, whilst UNESCO Bangkok Office Program Executive Professor Libing Wang and UNESCO Beijing Office former Director Mr. Singh put forward the concrete suggestions for the further development of the internationalization of higher education in Asian countries from the professional angle of international organization.

The participating experts took comprehensive discussion around speeches, and the question and answer link was excellent, which showed the realistic and pragmatic academic atmosphere. Some teachers and students of SUSTC attending the meeting expressed that they had enjoyed the rare thought feast, and some doctoral students of HKU and SCNU actively participated in the organization of the meeting, and gained valuable academic advice in direct communication with the experts and scholars.
