October 24-26 saw an influx of experts descend on Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) for the 3rd International Epigenetics Mechanism and Human Health Conference (The 3rd International Symposium). SUSTech’s Department of Biology worked with the Guangdong Bioinformatics Society, Hubei University and Annoroad Gene Technology to organize the conference.

The majority of sessions took place in the Lynn Library lecture halls. High profile guests included American Academy of Sciences members Carl Wu, Dinshaw J. Patel, Jerry Workman, Chinese Academy of Sciences Academician Shi Yunzhen and National Institute of Health Research senior researcher Keji Zhao. They were joined by nearly 200 experts and scholars in epigenetics. Biology Department Head Chen Wei opened the conference with a speech, with Professor Jin Wenfei presiding over the opening ceremony.

Chen Wei welcomed the experts and scholars to SUSTech. He introduced the rapid development of SUSTech and the Department of Biology, focusing on its scientific research, talent pipeline, production, study, and research.

48 reports from institutions across the world were presented over the three days of the conference. The institutions included the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Johns Hopkins University, Stows Medical Institute, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology of China, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and SUSTech.

Reports were on cutting-edge topics such as “focusing on chromatin structure, DNA methylation, histone modification, epigenome, transgenerational inheritance of acquired traits, epi-related protein structure, single-cell sequencing.” The conference included an academic poster exhibition and gave young scholars an opportunity to report their research findings. Experts and scholars took the chance to learn from each other and examine mutual exchanges with their respective institutions.

This conference convened the top experts and scholars in the field of epigenetics research in the world to discuss progress in this field from various angles. It has promoted academic exchanges between domestic and foreign experts and young scientists. There has also been an improvement in the research level of epigenetics and human health between China and the world.
