November 8th saw Professor Zhang Haimei from the Guangdong Administration College report on Guangdong Province’s economic situation at SUSTech. SUSTech University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang hosted the report.

At the start of her report, Zhang Haimei analyzed the economic situation of Guangdong and China. She spoke about the structural optimization, upgrading, and accelerating the transformation of the economy while improving its quality and efficiency. Zhang Haimei also expanded on the advantages of Guangdong’s economic development, in terms of its reform and opening up. She examined the steady growth and structural changes in order to make significant progress in implementing the innovation-driven development strategy. She spoke of the remarkable results that Guangdong Province has achieved in improving its environment and showcased the advantages of an open economy. Zhang Haimei talked glowingly about the great potential for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and the benefits it would provide for the development of Guangdong Province.

Guangdong Province has entered a “new normal” for its economy, with its growth rate shifting from high to medium-high speed. Zhang Haimei pointed out that Guangdong’s economy had mostly relied on resources like low-cost labor but noted that there are still many challenges to the economy. Challenges include regional development coordination between urban, rural and regional areas, environmental pressures and uncertainties around future development directions. She also acknowledged the huge gap between the economic output and fiscal revenue between the Pearl River Delta region and other sections of Guangdong Province. Zhang Haimei’s analysis provided attendees with a detailed and in-depth understanding of Guangdong’s economic situation.

Li Fengliang closed the report with a speech. He pointed out that Professor Zhang Haimei’s report demonstrated the positive development trend of Guangdong’s economy in this new era. It also enabled SUSTech’s students to understand the situation in Guangdong Province better. The students will have more confidence in their future.
