Lecture Site
Shenzhen, June 29 (SUSTC)–Tour with Science in China’s first lecture in Shenzhen and SUSTC SUSTC Lecture Series (28) was held in the library of SUSTC. Professor Wang Kan, director of Center for Plant Transformation of Iowa State University of Science and Technology, is the speaker of the lecture. Science China Tour is organized by the Science (Wechat Official Account) and is hosted by SUSTC. Before the lecture, President Professor Shiyi Chen had a talk with Professor in a cordial and friendly atmosphere. Vice President Professor Chuanyue WU hosted the event.
In the past thirty years, a major revolution had begun in agricultural practices and crop production. As the rapid development in plant genomics research identifies more genes, their functional analysis relies on strategies such as complementation, overexpression, or gene silencing. Plant genetic transformation is a critical technology required in the application of these strategies.
Professor Wang Kan gave a lecture on the topic of Motivation, Crisis and Opportunity. The purpose of the lecture is to make an in-depth interpretation of the history of the genetic transformation technology development.

As the world’s top scientist in the field of plant transformation, Professor Wang is the student of Kan Marc Van Montagu, father the first transgenic plant. She is also the leading scientist of the transformation of soybean and corn. After she founded The ISU Plant Transformation Facility (PTF) in 1995, Professor Wang Kan has become the leading the elite expert in the field.
