From October 23 to 24, 2015, the University held the first session of scientific research conference at Qilin Manor. Leaders, college principals, departmental principals, teachers and scientific staff of the University attended the Conference, and Head of Innovation Development Sector of the Ministry of Scienceand Technology Xu Liang, Inspector of Information Sector of National NaturalScience Foundation Commission He Jie, Director of Scientific Innovation Commission of Shenzhen City Lu Jian, Deputy Head of Hi-tech Technology Industry Sector of Development and Reform Commission of Shenzhen Lai Xiangqun, Director ofDepartment of Scientific Research of Peking University Zhou Hui, Academician ofChinese Academy of Sciences Chen Hesheng, foreign academician of Chinese Academy of Science and academician of European Academy of Sciences Wang Zhonglin and other guests were invited to attend. More than 200 people gathered here to pursue scientific research development and plan the future for South University of Science and Technology of China.

The Head of Scientific Research of the University Professor Zhao Yusheng introduced scientific research and progress of the University. He said that, funding rateby the National Natural Science Foundation of the University ranked top of all universities, and achievements made as a newly established university was surprising. He proposed scientific research positioning of the University inthe report: “challenge the world’s scientific research frontier, focus onkey national development requirements, serve local economic development,support undergraduate and postgraduate education with high-level scientific research, train top innovation talents with high-level scientific research, and shape scientific environment featuring independent thinking, free exploration, arduous researching and daring to innovate”.
The principal of Testing Center of theUniversity Professor Cheng Xin introduced development planning of public scientific research platform and working plan of scientific research service. The principal in charge of establishment of Micro-nanometer and Picometer Center Professor He Jiaqing, the principal in charge of establishment of Environmental Protection Center Professor Zheng Chunmiao, the principal in charge of establishment of Neurology and Cognitive Science Center Professor Hou Shengtao and the principal in charge of establishment of Grubbs Institute introduced construction philosophy and planning of research centers.
Principals of schools and departments of physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, electronics, materials, environment,finance and ocean introduced disciplinary scientific research development and reported planning of the future.
The Vice President Tang Tao gave a report titled Report on Scientific Research Development and Planning of South University of Science and Technology of China, and organized and concluded scientific research development. He said that, we would build the worldwide-recognized universities and research centers. The University would contribute to important scientific research programs of China, and try to acquire world-class scientific research achievements. A world-class research-based university was born in Shenzhen, and development of the university was in the prime period of favorable climatic,geographical and human conditions. As university of science and technology, we would build the first-class fundamental disciplines at the key disciplinary fields, reinforce inter-disciplinary building, and recommend departments to determine key research fields, key laboratory building and become a domestically leading and internationally famous research platform.

The Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and researcher of Institute of High Energy Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences gave a report titled Spallation Neutron Source of China. He introduced scientific significance cooperation of neutron source and typical technical application. At the conference, the President Chen Shiyi issued letter of employment to Academician Chen Hesheng, and employed Academician Chen Hesheng as part-time lecture professor of the University. The Institute of High Energy Physics of Chinese Academy of Science and the University signed a strategic cooperation partnership agreement, both parties would cooperation and establish “joint laboratory of SUSTC-Institute of High Energy Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences” to develop in terms of new materials, new energy and information technology, and would establish neuron science research center.
The Director of Nanometer Energy andSystem Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Science and foreign academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences Professor Wang Zhonglin gave a special report titled Self-driven System and Large-scale Blue Energy. Due to innovation of nanometer power generation, the authoritative Thomson Reuters Group forecasted that, Academician Wang would be one of the most powerful competitors for the Noble Prize in physics.

The Head of Sector of Innovation and Development of the Ministry of Science and Technology gave a report titled New Progress of Science and Technology Innovation and Outlook of the “Thirteenth Five-year Plan” of China. He detailed science and technology innovation of China entering new historical stage, science and technology development achievements of the “Twelfth Five-year Plan” and science and technology outlook of the “Thirteenth Five-year Plan”.
Inspector of Information Sector of National Natural Science Foundation Commission He Jie introduced use and application of national natural science foundation, encouraged the University to apply actively, and supported important and frontier scientific research required by the State.
Director of Scientific Innovation Commission of Shenzhen City Lu Jian gave a full introduction of Innovation-driven Development Strategy of Shenzhen, and would continue to support and guarantee development of scientific research by SUSTC.
Deputy Head of Hi-tech Technology Industry Sector of Development and Reform Commission of Shenzhen Lai Xiangqun explained the Policy on Special Fund Support for Strategic Emerging and Future Industry of Shenzhen City.
[Leaders of Scientific Research Department of Peking University shared experience with the Peking University]
The Director of Department of Scientific Research of Peking University Zhou Hui gave a report on How I Manage Scientific Research, shared working experience of scientific research at Peking University and scientific research achievement analysis of world famous universities and provided us with scientific research development. He suggested that, SUSTC should do high-end application science and technology research and drive industrial revolution. The research-based university should do engineering science but not technology development.
[Professors discussed in group to provide suggestions for scientific research of the University]
A discussion was performed at the conference, and the participating professors were divided into 4 groups to discuss discipline building and important program training, scientific research public platform and laboratory building, scientific research expense management, scientific research incentive mechanism and other issues and provide many opinions and suggestions for improvement of scientific research of the University.

The President Chen Shiyi gave a speech at the Conference. He said that, the objective of SUSTC was a small and high-quality research-based universities and adhered to the 3-in-1 school running philosophy (Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship). There are 3 objectives for scientific development of SUSTC, the first is ambitious and faces internationalization, and try to acquire Nobel-level original key scientific achievements; the second is to serve regional development. The University is located at the capital of innovation, and makes innovation and scientific research achievements serve development of Shenzhen and converts technology research into core competitiveness; the third is to serve key requirements of the country. When required by the country, “SUSTC” must be the one. SUSTC shall have passion of development and down-to-earth work. Fundamental of scientific research of SUSTC is talent, and talent is our edge. Many professors of the University are no more than 40 years old. Scientific research of the University will be listed top 20 of universities of program 985 in 5 years; and scientific research of key disciplines will be top in 10 years.
The Secretary of Party Committee Li Ming gave a speech at the conference. He said that, the University had shaped preliminary ideas and planning in disciplines, majors and key research fields,the planning given by principals of departments in terms of scientific research was excited and they had different positioning, and the University supported diverse development. The University shall encourage technical tackling of inter-disciplinary majors as the key supported by funds of the state, province and city. At present, the State takes innovation driving as the key, and scientific research development of the University shall match the “Thirteenth Five-year Plan” of China. SUSTC is located in the city with developed high-tech, and the University shall place layout of “industry-university-research”as a key location and attract a batch of entrepreneurs to act as part-time professors of the University. As for scientific research development of the University, the fundamental shall be on basic fields, application research encourages value production, and industry-university-research shall benefit professors and the University. All circles of the society focus much on construction of SUSTC. We have the mission to operate SUSTC better with the most effective method down-to-earth.
