Shenzhen’s Kylin Villa was the host venue for the International Interdisciplinary Forum of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). More than 200 experts and scholars from across the globe attended the forum. High profile universities such as Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, the University of Oxford, the National University of Singapore, the University of Tokyo, Peking University and Tsinghua University sent representatives to the forum. SUSTech President Chen Shiyi joined the excellent academic talents from China’s high-level research institutions such as the University of Science and Technology China, Fudan University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Chen Shiyi welcomed all the scholars and experts to the opening ceremony and shared his life experiences thus far. He said that the environment for research, life, and development are continually improving; particularly in Shenzhen. With SUSTech located in Shenzhen, the Chinese capital of innovation, the University can provide outstanding scientific research and living conditions for young talents. SUSTech is looking forward to having more aspirational young people join its faculty where SUSTech can gather their dreams and make significant progress.

Zhao Yusheng, Director of the Office of Research and Dean of the SUSTech Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies, briefed the audience about the mission and goals of SUSTech. He also spoke about SUSTech’s governance system, the development of its academic disciplines, the formation of its talent team, and the achievements of its scientific research.

Zheng Yan, chair professor of SUSTech’s School of Environmental Science and Engineering, gave an English speech entitled “The Most Lovable and Loving People.” She said that SUSTech had gathered the most lovely people in the world, where they can achieve their goals and realize their ideals. She hoped that everyone could work with SUSTech to climb the scientific peak and benefit society together

Following the opening ceremony, the experts and scholars visited the laboratories of each SUSTech department and will hold a two-day academic exchange and in-depth discussion with each set of departmental professors. MIT Research Scientist Dr. Zhang Da said: “At SUSTech, I have felt the enthusiasm and tolerance of this entrepreneurial hotspot in Shenzhen for nearly 30 years. What excites me most is to see the research work of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering. SUSTech has a broad vision to solve global problems, and it focuses on a microcosmic perspective to promote practical technological progress.”

Since the founding of SUSTech, we have vigorously introduced high-level talents. Up to now, SUSTech has signed more than 300 teachers, of which more than 90% have overseas work experience, and more than 60% have experience in working or studying in the top 100 universities in the world.
