In order to fulfill the safety requirements of the Provincial Department of Education and draw lessons from the “12.26” laboratory explosion in Beijing Jiaotong University, on December 28, 2018, the safety management committee of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) organized all departments, centers and departments responsible for safety and security personnel to carry out the year-end safety inspection.

Those responsible for security participated in a meeting regarding the deployment of security for the safety inspection. The meeting was chaired by Liu Lianfu, Director of the Office of Safety, Health and Environment (OSHE). The meeting conveyed the notification request of Guangdong Provincial Education Department and the special safety inspection of the scientific research laboratory of SUSTech on December 27.

Vice President Lu Chun explained the plans for the year-end security inspection at the meeting. Lu Chun asked all departments to rectify the problems of investigation immediately and strictly implement various safety management measures. He stressed the importance of implementing the “one post, two responsibilities” system, and encouraged all departments to strengthen their safety training, publicity and education programs for teachers and students. Institutions responsible for safety and security personnel should draw lessons from the incidents at Beijing Jiaotong University, to comprehensively strengthen laboratory safety management and prevent major accidents.

This major safety inspection was carried out by six groups. The inspection group carried out safety inspections on more than 20 key places and key parts such as the campus and surrounding public security, office spaces, student activity places, expert apartments, student dormitories, canteens, supermarkets, construction sites and leasing operations.

They also carried out a second safety inspection on the laboratories. The inspection included examining fire controls, transportation, medical treatment, food hygiene, kitchen equipment, water and electricity stoves, construction projects, laboratory equipment, dangerous chemicals, network security technical protection measures. During the inspection process, the inspection team coordinated and solved the hidden safety problems that need to be solved by departments, and put forward suggestions for departments to rectify their previously hidden safety problems.

After the inspection, Lu Chun asked the heads of all departments to enhance their awareness of safety management and pay more attention to it. He reminded everyone to work more carefully and take more effective measures to ensure the safety, harmony and stability of the campus.
