On the afternoon of July 13, 2015, academician of CAS and president of Peking University Yuanpei College E Weinan was invited to our university for an exchange visit. Deputy director of preparation department of our college Han Wei, director of students affair department, director of college and academician E Weinan had a discussion on college construction and management issues.

As one of the colleges for exploring college student management mode at the earliest in China, Peking University Yuanpei College had gone through 8 years of development. Academician E Weinan introduced that Yuanpei College was the undergraduate education reform test site of Peking University and was regarded as Shenzhen special zone for higher education in China. “Till now, the outdated undergraduate education system has become one of the main bottlenecks to establish first-class universities and has the characteristics of heavy professional course task, fine specialty division, narrow directions and rigid regulations, which greatly restrains the space of the students to explore and think freely.” E Weinan pointed out, solving these problems would not come overnight; and as the undergraduate education reform test site of Peking University, Yuanpei College took the responsibilities for exploring a new education mode suitable for long-term development of Peking university.

How to make the college system play an efficient role in development course of the students? Academician E Weinan shared his views. He thought, first of all, the college should provide a space chosen by the student really, including the space for choosing the specialty freely and the space for exploring and thinking freely; and meanwhile, directions also should be given to the students to make the correct choices. “This should be realized by conducting training courses before they enter the universities and freshman seminar and bringing the tutorial system into full play.”

Next, the college should explore a set of Chinese mode of liberal education system, not only including quality-oriented and liberal education, but also including professional education and scientific research. “The most important educational object of the college is no other than to cultivate qualified Chinese citizen, which lies in how to set political, humanities and social science courses.” Academician E Weinan presented that four of eight compulsive general courses set by Yuanpei College currently were the political courses. “Universities in each country throughout the world are provided with the political courses. When I taught at Princeton University, the university came up with their training objective was to cultivate qualified American citizens upon American values and mainstream culture. So currently speaking, the political course in China can be improved a lot.” Academician E Weinan pushed forward the political course teaching reform mode of “large-scale class teaching and small class discussion” and proposed to take socialist core values, modern and contemporary Chinese history and Chinese cultural core value system as the main teaching contents of the political course. “we cannot establish durable Chinese mode of liberal education system until the basic consensus is achieved on these problems.” Academician E Weinan said.

They also had a fruitful discussion and communication around the tutorial system, college cultural space construction, college building function improvement, international communication platform establishment and other topics.
