On September 24, 2015, the university holds a symposium on the establishment of higher education research institute. Secretary of the party committee Li Ming and President Chen Shiyi gives a speech on the symposium which is hosted by Han Wei, Deputy Director of Preparation Office of the university.
Higher Education Research Institute in the South University of Science and Technology of China has been officially established on June 16, 2015. The institute holds the symposium to provide the university with better service and define the work target. In the symposium, Chen Shiyi presents Li Ming the letter of appointment on behalf of the university. Chen Shiyi represents that the Higher Education Research Institute is the first institute to combine education with culture. The personnel structure consisting of full-time staffs, department leaders and teachers shows that the university has paid great attention to education research. The institute will play a driving role in the university’s teaching and scientific research, especially in the improvement of quality of teaching. As the experimental plot of China higher education reform, the university needs to take research about the national and international education development policy including policy of science and technology to produce a batch of achievements to drive the educational growth in Shenzhen even in China. At present, China higher education development is in a beneficial times and the institute would build a cooperative relationship with Peking University and Beijing Normal University. As the supporting entity for second-class institutes of United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, the institute would locate in Shenzhen but provide service for the world.

Li Ming represents that the Higher Education Research Institute would carry out work in the following four aspects. First, the institute would be the think tank for the university to deepen educational reform and innovation and provide policies, ideas and solutions for teaching reform. Second, the institute would be the thinking bank for second-class institutions of United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization in higher education innovation. Third, the institute would a platform concentrating well-known high-level professors from home and abroad to publish globally recognized achievements. Fourth, the institute would be an active body by obtaining funds through projects, cooperation and project study with the basis of financial support provided by the university. As for general construction thoughts, the institute should be international, small-sized, special and high level to strive for influential achievements in the future years and become the templet of innovative development.

Han Wei puts forward the following requirements for work in the institute. The institute orientation should be the combination of internationalization and diversification to attract creative talents to conduct the research. Complete academic exchange system should be formed. The institute should be close to the university’s general steps to prepare postgraduate training programs. Researches in the institute should be centered on overall situation and prior fields. Construction planning should be further improved and responsibilities in the construction should be implemented to form the work mechanism with continuous propulsion power.

On the symposium, relevant officers report the work progress regarding application for the second-class institution of United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization and put forward the primary ideas of the institute construction.
