OnOctober 16, 2015, the first South China high-end forum on frontier syntheticchemistry is grandly opened in SUSTC. This forum is held by the Department OfChemistry in our university with the theme of “organic chemistry, new medicine,new materials, new energy: challenges and opportunities” , mainly discussingand exchanging latest development and application of fields such as naturalproducts chemistry, chiral catalysis chemistry, organic synthetic chemistry,physical organic chemistry, metal-organic chemistry, organic element chemistry,bioorganic chemistry and chemical biology, supramolecular chemistry and organicmaterials chemistry academically. Famous experts in organic chemistry and otherrelevant researches such as academicians Li Guoqiang, Wu Yundong, HuangNaizheng and Ren Yonghua, numerous scholars of young and middle ages as well asrepresentatives of business circles have attended this forum.
Opening addressof President Chen Shiyi
In the opening address, President Chen Shiyi expressed thanks for attendedexperts and scholars of chemistry filed and said that the orientation Research,innovation and Entrepreneurship of SUSTC represents thedevelopment direction of SUSTC. SUSTC locates in Shenzhen where technology andfoundation can drive and support the innovation and development of SUSTC. It isthe first time for SUSTC to organize such large-scale academic forum in chemistryfield. Department of chemistry in SUSTC currently develops very well. It haslaunched over 40 scientific research projects of national level and local levelindependently and published over 80 important papers on authoritative journalsregarding chemistry within three years. The dramatic development of Departmentof chemistry cannot be achieved without the assistance and support from expertsand scholars of chemistry filed. South China is one of the best regions for thedevelopment of chemical industry with enormous potentiality. China has 10 largestchemical pharmaceutical manufacturers and four of them are in Shenzhen. It ispromising for the development of chemical researches since in Shenzhen where wehave basic researches of chemistry and exits for industry.

He expressed thanksfor Shenzhen society of chemistry and chemical engineering as well as SUSTC thatheld this academic forum and extended a warm welcome to four presentacademicians from CAS Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, PekingUniversity, University of Hong Kong and Chinese University of Hong Kong as wellas 17 present experts and scholars from institutes such as Hong Kong Universityof Science & technology, South China University of Technology and SouthUniversity of Science and Technology of China. He said that this conference isof great significance for the publicity of knowledge about frontier chemistryand promotion of university-industry-research cooperation regarding chemistryand chemical engineering major.
Academician LinGuoqiang is giving his report.
Lin Guoqiang, academicianof Chinese Academy of Sciences, expert of organic chemistry and researcher of ChineseAcademy of Sciences Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, gave an openingreport titled Study of New Methods in Chiral Chemistry. In the report, LinGuoqiang indicated that asymmetric synthesis is the most effective method ofobtaining chiral compound and of great significance in respects such asresearches of organic synthesis and chiral drugs as well as fine chemistry.Currently it is also an active research highlight and frontier in chemicalfield. He explained some scientific research achievements obtained whiledeveloping design and synthesis of new chiral alkene ligands, systematicalexploring high antipodal selective reaction regarding a series of metal &biocatalysis and efficient asymmetric synthesis regarding several significantstructural organic functional molecules, bioactive molecules and medicinemolecules.
Academician WuYundong is giving his report.
Wu Yundong, academicianof Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor of Peking University, gave areport with the theme “Mechanistic Understandings of Catalytic C-H BondActivations” on the morning of the seminar where he has presented hisachievements in Catalytic C-H Bond Activations and stressed the importance ofdynamic experiments and experiments of mass spectrometry.
It is reportedthat there are over 20 keynote speeches made by present experts and scholars inthis two-day forum. Huang Naizheng, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences andprofessor of Chinese University of Hong Kong, will give a report titled“Studies Towards Total Synthesis of Shizukaol” (total synthesis research of Shizukaol A, Cryptotrione andDhilirolides); Ren Yonghua, Academicianof Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor of University of Hong Kong, willgive a report with theme of “From Discrete Molecules to SupramolecularAssembly, Nanostructures and Functions” (From discrete molecular to supramolecularassembly, nano-structure and function). Relevant reports will also be given byZhang Xumu, director of Department of chemistry in SUSTC and other teachers in Departmentof Chemistry such as Li Chuangchuang, Liu Xinyuan, Tan Bin, He Zhenyu, ZhongLonghua and Zhang Yuanzhu.
This forum hasprovided a high-level and end platform for exchange in organic chemistry whichwill enhance the exchange of organic chemistry in Guangdong, Shenzhen and HongKong, bring active atmosphere to local organic chemistry and promote academicstatus and influence of organic chemistry in Guangdong, Shenzhen and Hong Kongdomestically and internationally.
