To actively respond to SUSTC positioning as a senior-level research-oriented university with international fame when determining its development strategy and making plans for the discipline building, SUSTC Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering held the Seminar on Development Strategies on October 31, 2015. The Seminar was chaired by Professor Chen Yifan, Dean of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. And it was attended by Wang Yongjie, Member of CPC SUSTC Committee and Director of Party & Administration Office, Professor Sun Xiaowei, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and all faculty members in SUSTC Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, who made hot discussions at the Seminar.

Professor Sun Xiaowei introduced how Nanyang Technological University, in 20 years’ time, develops into a world-leading university ranking No. 13 in the QS List. He also gave proposals on how the SUSTC Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering can transition from the runner trying to catch up into a leading runner.

Professor Chen Yifan gave an overview introduction to the current development, development strategy and objectives of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He emphasized that, the Department should take the vision of building the world-class discipline of electrical and electronic engineering, be dedicated to solving the major challenges faced by the human society with senior-level academic researches, become the pacesetter in electronic information technologies with cutting-edge technical innovations, and cultivate excellent talents with global vision, local wisdom and entrepreneurial spirit. 

Professor Yu Hongyu, Vice Dean of the Department in charge of teaching, from the perspectives of undergraduate and postgraduate course building, reform of teaching system, monitoring of teaching quality and international cooperation and exchanges, introduced in detail development of teaching in the Department while focusing on joint cultivation of postgraduates, application for master and doctoral stations, 3-semester system, fostering of excellent teachers, co-building of internship base, recruitment of international students and overseas exchanges of students. He emphasized on the importance of R&D stimulating teaching and the close combination among innovation chain, talent chain and industrial chain. 

Professor Gong Yi reported about the Party building in the Department and encouraged the teachers to carry on the spirit of Three Stricts and Three Steadies and push forward rapid development of teaching, research, building of faculty teams and discipline building while arranging the future Party building in the Department.

Professor Zhang Xinhai introduced the academic exchanges and overseas promotion in the Department. He emphasized that the Department has hosted many international conferences such as those for IEEE and OSA. At the same time, the Department has been working hard to promote organizing of brand lectures such as Lecturers Given by Electronics and Information Experts, and Lectures on Cutting-Edge Electronics and Information Science. He hoped the Department can continue to enhance academic exchanges. Professor Zhang Xinhai also introduce the latest progress made in the Department website building and Newsletter editing.  

Afterwards, participants went into discussions in groups about teaching and R&D in the Department. As far as teaching was concerned, they mainly discussed “short summer semester teaching arrangements”, “arrangements of teaching workload”, “monitoring and evaluation of teaching quality” and “cultivation of international students”, etc. About the R&D, they had hot discussions on “enhancing discipline building, inter-disciplinary team building and fostering of major R&D projects”, “improving R&D capacity and influence”, “regulating the management of competition R&D fund”, “pushing forward building and management of R&D public platform and laboratories”, and “promoting the combination of enterprise, R&D institute and education institutions and cultivating the entrepreneurial spirit”, etc.

At the Seminar, Wang Yongjie made the last speech. He recognized what the Department has achieved in teaching and in R&D till today and said SUSTC would continue to give strong support to the building and development of the Department and hoped it could make excellent contributions to SUSTC becoming a first-class university in the world.
