On the morning of December 11, the 1st “Technology Innovation Camp for Outstanding High School Students” of the South University of Science and Technology of China (SUSTC) opened as scheduled. 111 Grade-2 & 3 high school students from 20 domestic provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions gathered at the lecture hall of SUSTC’s No. 1 research building for the opening ceremony. Li Ming, Chairman of University Council, delivered a speech. Wu Chuanyue, vice president of SUSTC, made a keynote presentation on the training of top innovative talents.
The camp will enable teenagers to know the latest frontier technology trends in the world better, experience and explore the mystery of scientific research, enhance mutual understanding and exchange, and experience the student life at a high-level university in close range. Six professional groups were established, covering mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, electronic and electric engineering, materials science and engineering. Running from December 11 to 13, the camp involves major introductions, academic reports, scientific experiments, colleges’ team activities, discussions with the president, and exchanges with SUSTC’s students.

SUSTC aspired to become an international high-level research-oriented university. Compared to traditional universities, SUSTC’s talent training model has distinct features and highlights: I First-class faculty; II Internationalization; III More experimental lessons; IV Strict management; V Innovation and entrepreneurship encouragement, Li noted. The three-day camp will be inclusive and fresh with high technology content, said him, expecting the campers to take active part in this camp, acquire good experience and join SUSTC in its efforts to promote China’s technological innovation in the near future.
Vice President Wu Chuanyue made a keynote presentation
Wu made a keynote presentation entitled Training World Top Innovative Talents. He introduced SUSTC’s orientation, vision, features as well as the development of joint postgraduate training, faculty construction, discipline setting and scientific research, with emphasis on SUSTC’s talent training model innovation centered on “college system, tutorial system, credit system, internationalization, individualization and elitism”. SUSTC yearns for outstanding high school students who love learning, think independently, are creative and have dreams, he added.
Following the opening ceremony, the campers visited the campus. They will enter six departments for a journey of technological innovation by disciplinary groups afterwards.
