On December 12, 2015, the first session Technology Innovation Camp for Outstanding High School Students kicked off the Day 2 activities. 111 students in Grade 11 and 12 from 20 provinces and municipalities experienced the campus life of university in SUSTC by attending such activities as lectures, experiments, college team activities, discussion with President and talks with SUSTC faculty members and students.

To learn their feelings towards the Camp and impression on SUSTC during the past 2 days, the SUSTC News Agency journalists selected 9 members in the Camp at random to interview them, talking about their campus life in SUSTC.
Impression I: The University They Desire
When seeing the fascinating campus environment and picturesque landscape in SUSTC, the senior high-school students in the Camp used the same word to express their impression on SUSTC, “Exceptional!”
Chen Jiayu from Hunan
SUSTC architectures impressed me most with their “dynamics”. Some traditional and historical universities often produce the dull impression. However, SUSTC makes me full of hope. Probably it is because of the greening and architecture style. I love the sunny environment, feeling comfortable.
I feel the visit to SUSTC has given me a clear concept of what university is like. I have found a college student is quite different from the high-school student. And I have witnessed the colorful campus life in the university. I hope to bring back what I have seen and felt to my school so that I can do better in the following preparations for the entrance exam to college.

I feel the SUSTC campus is very young and energetic, like the USA when it was just established. Because of the short history, country has nothing binding it, thus able to produce new things like an infant. SUSTC gives me the same feeling.
Besides, the atmosphere in SUSTC is proper for research. I feel the university is like an ivory tower. I like the pure atmosphere in SUSTC.

The campus is really marvelous. Standing in the campus, I can see buildings on the one end and mountains on the other end, feeling I have returned to the nature. The architecture style here is very unique. For instance, there are many glass elements. For example, the teaching building and library have glass classrooms with wonderful lighting and environmental elements.
Shenzhen is a fast-growing city with excellent climate. Nowadays, the weather in Shenzhen is just like the comforting early autumn in Shaanxi.
Yesterday I saw a girl student in SUSTC who graduated from my school. From her I could sense the special quality exclusive to SUSTC students featuring the pursuit for knowledge.

Impression II: Free Academic Atmosphere Stimulated Greatest Potential
As an innovative research-oriented university, SUSTC advocates the philosophy and has the target for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. In the Camp activities, the high-school students entered the laboratories of physics, chemistry, biology and materials, experiencing the charm of research with the help of professors and experiment faculty.

Either in the laboratories equipped with high-end apparatus, or in the lecture halls with famous professors, I could think and ask questions freely while exploring the fields of my interest in a free way without the binding rules. The free atmosphere in SUSTC can definitely stimulate my greatest potential. By attending the Camp, I have identified my study orientation in the future. Here in SUSTC, we can have access to the sufficient experiment resources, the tranquil campus environment, and the easy-going professors willing to talk with us about all things. The University is full of all possibilities. I am confident that in the future I will become a SUSTC student in the School of Electrics and Electronics.

In the School of Materials, I used the 3D printer to print a SUSTC badge and 2 batteries. Walking out of the piles of paper homework in Grade 12, I entered a brand-new and fantastic world. By attending the Camp, I was not only touched by the beautiful campus environment and high-end architectures and facilities. It was really amazing when I walked into the lab and took the various materials on the lab desk. How wonderful it was to make experiments on my own! Different from the perplexing knowledge in textbooks, the laboratory brings the practical and personal experience, which is most enlightening knowledge.

Impression III: Academy Life Is Heart-warming and Lively
The Residential College (hereafter referred to as “RC” ) is the core part of holistic education in SUSTC, which is also a major characteristic in the talent training in the university. The RC is dedicated to building a community for the students in various grades and majors to have close and interactive exchanges with their tutors. So what is the feeling of high-school students after experiencing the academy life?
Zhang Yanzhao from Shandong: Last night, I attended a brain-racking English corner activity in Shuren Academy. In the beginning, we tried to solve riddles in English. Later on, we were given some animation paintings and were asked to sequence them before telling the story shown in the paintings in English. Then we saw a silent movie. After that, we gave dubbing to the movie. Though oral English of Shandong students is good, there is still room for improvement when compared with students from other regions. However, we can make great progress by speaking English boldly in such an environment. The academy is lively and encouraging. And the senior students in the academy have open personality and are very nice to us.
Xu Hao and Tang Yimin from Hubei: We feel the academy is really interesting with diverse activities. For the high-school students in the Camp, we feel the academy is a wonderful platform of exchanges. Last night, we had a discussion in the lounge of Zhicheng Academy. During the discussion, the students exchanged their ideas, thus deepening our mutual understanding and upgrading each other’s inner world. The senior students in the Academy defined a topic for the discussion, “When studying in the university, which do you prefer, the charming social personality or professional knowledge?”. Each student there was active to express his or her idea. The debate was so hot that we almost argued with each other.
Compared with other universities, SUSTC offers greater freedom and openness. The academy system in SUSTC, compared with schools or departments system in other universities, ensures the students coming from different major backgrounds can live together, thus producing something new when they share their ideas and opinions.
Fang Chuncheng from Anhui: I think the academy is just like an autonomous group. Our daily activities happen in the academy. The system provides larger space for the students. The academy is a heartwarming place. For a student studying here, such a place would give him the sense of safety. Last night, we sung songs together with senior students in the academy. It was so good!

Impression IV: Dining Hall Experience-Delicious, Delicious!
Zhang Yanzhao from Shandong: The dinning hall in SUSTC serves cuisines from almost all parts of China. The fried dishes and pickled food are really featured because my school does not serve such food. After tasting them, I find they are even more delicious than those served in restaurants.
Xu Hao & Tang Yimin from Hubei: In these days, I have meals in level 2 of SUSTC dining hall, having Western food and noodles served there. The food quality is really good compared with that in my school. Besides, the price here is affordable and quantity is sufficient. The 25 Yuan meal coupon given to us cannot be used all.
Fang Chuncheng from Anhui: The dining hall in my school is in the leading position in Anhui province. However, the food there is not as delicious as the food in SUSTC. The Western food served in level 2 of SUSTC dining hall is very special. If the same food was served in my school, the price would be much higher.
