On the afternoon of December 22, SUSTC convened 2016 Undergraduate Enrollment Mobilization & Training meeting, kicking off the enrollment of undergraduates for 2016. President Chen Shiyi addressed the meeting, which was attended by about 200 participants including Vice President Qin Zheng, Secretary General Dong Chaojun, Chief Financial Officer Ye Qin, Chief Operating Officer Lu Chun, Chief of General Affair Office Wang Yongjie, Director Zhao Yusheng of the Office of Reseasrch, principals of schools and departments, all faculty members and staff in 22 enrollment teams. The meeting was chaired by Vice President Wu Chuanyue.

According to President Chen Shiyi, undergraduate enrollment is the priority work in a university. SUSTC should not only enroll excellent students, but also the most suitable ones. For 2016 enrollment, SUSTC has a few positive factors. First, speed up the building of faculty team, increasing the number of high-level professors. SUSTC has doubled its number of professors listed in the 1,000 Talents Program and Young 1,000 Talents Program of China, placing SUSTC in the leading position among Chinese universities. Most of SUSTC professors, who are young and international, work in the teaching positions. Even the famous ones will take programs to teach undergraduates or work as tutors for them. Second, SUSTC is becoming more international, including the international faculty members and education model. SUSTC is making utmost efforts to build the first-class language center in the world and recruit the leading international expert whose mother tongue is English as the Director of the Center. It will also recruit more than 30 excellent teachers of English to help students with their language proficiency. Third, the discipline development has taken the initial shape. Based on the original 8 schools and departments, it will add the Department of Marine Science and Engineering, Department of Mechanics and Air & Space Engineering, Department of Machinery and Energy, and Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Fourth, the expansion of international cooperation. For instance, a number of world-famous universities such as Chicago University are willing to cooperate with SUSTC because they know us very well. At present, dozens of overseas universities have partnered with SUSTC, ensuring each undergraduate student of SUSTC can make one overseas visit for the purpose of exchange. Besides, SUSTC has kicked off the joint education program for postgraduates. It is predicted that SUSTC, in partnership with Chinese and overseas universities, will enroll 160 postgraduates, providing more opportunities for its undergraduates.

“We should attach great emphasis on enrollment of undergraduates”, said Chen Shiyi. Most of SUSTC postgraduates come from its undergraduates, whose quality directly influences the quality of postgraduates, the teaching and R&D of each professor and whether SUSTC can realize its goal of building the first-class university. The enrollment work should improve the standard and clarify the standard. Thinking decides how far one can go. SUSTC should be bold to make innovations and make constant progress in enrollment by making ceaseless efforts.

Vice Director Sun Qiaoyu of Internet Information Center explained SUSTC’s application system for 2016 undergraduate enrollment while introducing its functions and operation methods. Vice Director Liu Xiaoyang of the Department of Finance explained relevant finance disciplines and matters needing attention. Director Zhao Hongjun of the Admission Office made simple demo about enrollment promotion.
