Vice Minister of Education Du Yubo visits SUSTech to supervise and inspect school opening work

On February 28, 2016, Du Yubo, Vice Minister of Education and Deputy Secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the Ministry of Education, visited Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) to supervise and inspect the school opening work in the spring of 2016. He spoke highly of SUSTech’s development, expecting it to continue to carry forward the spirit of reform and innovation, constantly explore the system and mechanism of school running, and seize the opportunity to accelerate the construction of a top-notched university and first-class disciplines. Leaders of SUSTech including Council Chairman Li Ming and President Chen Shiyi, heads of schools and departments, professor representatives and heads of relevant administrative departments attended a supervision symposium. Xing Feng, Deputy Director of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province and Guo Yurong, Director of the Shenzhen Bureau of Education accompanied Du for the visit.

At the symposium, on behalf of SUSTech, Li thanked Du for his long-term strong support for the founding and development of SUSTech, as well as his great favor of SUSTech. He made a presentation on SUSTech’s president responsibility system under the leadership of the Party Committee and its efforts in strengthening Party building in school running; emphatically introduced the pattern of taking colleges as student administration centers and integrating the work of the Office of Student Affairs, the Youth League Committee and colleges; and reported the situation of campus security construction.

Chen made a presentation on SUSTech’s development plan of “constructing a world top research-oriented university in China” and the construction situation in such aspects as schooling objective, vision, orientation, disciplinary development, faculty, talent training, scientific research, international cooperation and campus construction.

Vice President Wu Chuanyue made a presentation on the school opening work in the spring of 2016, including the implementation of school opening assurance conditions, strict compliance with the national regulations and policies on school running, and campus security work organization.

“I am very happy to visit SUSTech and excited to see its development. I feel inspired! SUSTech is a major innovation of the school running system and mechanism in higher education. With a new mechanism, a high starting point and fast development, SUSTech is promising. SUSTech’s students are excellent with a strong sense of mission and responsibility,” said Du. He spoke highly of SUSTech’s work in recent years in such aspects as defining the orientation of school running, establishing and perfecting the system, advancing discipline and faculty construction, renovating the mechanism of talent training, and serving the area and Shenzhen’s economic development, requiring SUSTech to integrate itself with the society and economy of the country and Shenzhen, and develop with the new concept of “renovating, developing and stimulating the vitality of modern education, developing and optimizing the educational structure in an coordinated manner, pioneering education through green development, opening and developing educational resources, and promoting educational equity through shared development” proposed in the “thirteenth five-year” period. Referring to the future of SUSTech, he expected that SUSTech would continue to carry forward the spirit of reform and innovation, constantly explore and perfect the system and mechanism of school running, and explore duplicable and successful experience for the reform and development of China’s higher education; would seize the opportunity to accelerate the construction of first-class universities and disciplines; would adhere to coordinated development to better serve the area and Shenzhen’s economic development; would develop in an opening manner to promote the mainland’s educational exchanges and cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao; and would work strictly and practically, strengthen the ideological and political construction of the Party, grasp the right direction and improve work quality.

Du visited laboratories and held talks with students. During the talks, he expected students to lay a solid foundation, have lofty ideals and ambitions, study hard and develop the spirit of “responsibility, innovation and practice”; stay calm and confident in the face of mainstream development; keep the strong awareness of unexpected development in problem analysis; and maintain a positive sense of responsibility for the future.
