On March 29, 2016, Executive Committee of Association of 1,000 Talents Program determined to appoint Chair Zhang Xumu of SUSTech Chemistry Department as the Vice Director of its Chemistry & Chemical Industry Committee.

The Association of 1,000 Talents Program unites and serves those who have and who are studying overseas. Implementing the Chinese strategy of rejuvenating the nation via sci-tech and talents, the Association works hard to become the driving force of “innovation and entrepreneurship campaign” in China, thus contributing wisdom and power to building the innovative country and realizing great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. It has become the influential senior association of high-level talents that has great appealing force. The Chemistry and Chemical Industry Committee in the Association is an important special committee in the Association of 1,000 Talents Program, which gathers many talents and authoritarian figures. Nowadays, it has 385 members in the 1,000 Talents Program specialized in such fields as new chemical industry, new medicines and new materials, etc.

Prof. Zhang Xumu is the first chemist in mainland China who has received the title of ACS Cope Scholar (2002). His research result eneyne cycloisomerization is named after his surname as Zhangenyne cycloisomerization, which has been included in Name Reaction that only includes about 200 name reactions (including those of Nobel Prize winners). It has become one of the few name reactions named after the Chinese people. In 2015, Prof. Zhang Xumu started to work as Chair and Chair Professor in SUSTech Chemistry Department.
