Recently, SUSTech obtained the formal approval for holding the “31st Chinese Chemistry Olympiad (Finals) & Winter Camp and Chinese Delegation Trials and Trainings for 50th International Chemistry Olympiad”, the first national basic subject competition for Shenzhen, indicating a major leap for the building of advanced subject and development of innovative talents in Shenzhen.
Since 2014, the bidding team led by Zhang Xumu, Chair of Department of Chemistry, have made several in-depth exchanges with Chinese Chemical Society, in order to hold a full view and knowledge of the competition. During the bidding, Jiang Yuyang, President of Shenzhen Association for Science and Technology, Chen Shiyi, President of SUSTech and Tang Tao, Vice President of SUSTech carefully listened to the reports on bidding and gave proper instructions. Upon over two years of efforts, SUSTech won the bid for the competition.

The 31st Chinese Chemistry Olympiad (Finals) & Winter Camp is planned to be held in SUSTech for a week (the late November to early December in 2017) and usher nearly 1,000 attendees, including over 400 high school students from almost 30 provinces, cities and autonomous regions and over 500 leaders, observers, non-voting delegates and associate representatives. As the core force for the preparations of the competition, the Department of Chemistry has been working hard with relevant faculties of SUSTech.
With international background, the Chinese Chemistry Olympiad (Finals) & Winter Camp has become the highest-level chemistry “National Games” for high schools in China. SUSTech, a trial pilot for the comprehensive reform of higher education, is now pioneering the explorations of modern university system and innovative talents development mode with Chinese characteristics. This grand event, symbolizing the unique features of Shenzhen in chemistry, is a significant movement for Shenzhen in the implementation of the strategy – “building modern and international innovative city”, attraction of talents and achievement of high-level subject research and innovative talent cultivation.
The ” Chinese Chemistry Olympiad for High School Students in China” aims to publicize chemical knowledge, promote the exchanges of new teaching methods on chemistry, propel the chemistry teaching reform for universities and high schools and enhance chemistry teaching quality of China. All the competitors are expected to give full play to their strengths in this event.
