The SUSTech teams bringing science and technology to rural areas led by the Youth League Committee recently were awarded the title of “Excellent Service Teams” in the recent selection of the 2016 Social Practice Teams of College Students Volunteering to Serve Rural Areas of Guangdong Province During Summer Vacations. “Outstanding Service Individuals” were awarded to Lai Xiaodong, deputy director of Youth League Committee, tutor Yang Sheng and two students Wang Yanjing and Jiang Yinghao.

The social practice event, jointly organized by the Guangdong Publicity Department, Civilization Office, the Provincial Education Department, Guangdong Group Provincial Party Committee and Guangdong Students’ Federation, attracted nearly 400,000 college students to contribute their time and energy to serving the grass-root masses and to conduct various social practice activities.

Under the theme of “Youths Contributing to the 13^th Five-Year Plan and Working Together to Achieve the Chinese Dream”, the Youth League Committee offered students a number of social practice courses and projects based on the university’s curricula arrangements.

A total of 131 social practice teams including Beautiful China Practice Team, National and Social Conditions Observation Team and Education and Loving-care Service Team were registered at the Youth League Committee. Nearly 700 students from six universities took the social practice courses and completed 685 social practice reports, accounting for 98.41% of the total participants.

After the preliminary selection by the General Branch of Youth League and the final selection by the Youth League Committee of SUSTech, four teams including “Belt and Road Social Practice Team” won the first place of the university’s social practices, six teams including “2016 Volunteering Charity Team” won the second place and eight teams including “The Red Memory Squad” the third place. Two general branches of the Youth League Committee including Zhicheng Residential College were awarded the title of excellent organizers of the social practice. 11 tutors including Lai Xiaodong were awarded the title of outstanding teachers in the social practice and 18 students including Jiang Yinghao won the title of “Outstanding Individuals”.
