SUSTech students score high in The Economist’s “High Value of People” University Contest

On April 28th 2017, “The Economist – Business” held the first “High Value of People” University Contest finals at Shanghai High School of Finance’s (SAIF) Pudong Campus. SUSTech’s Department of Finance had a number of candidates and Chen Xingyi, Gao Zhijie, Tang Shiyu, Wei Chao, Zhang Yutong were the 5 students to rank within the top 10 at #7.

A total of 560 teams from China and abroad participated in the competition, 342 teams passed the preliminary examination and 100 went on through to the second round. In the second round, the SUSTech team visited a business incubator, interviewed entrepreneurs and analysed plenty of business information among other activities in Shanghai, earning them a position among the top 10.

Peking University, Tsinghua University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), Sun Yat-sen and other top national research teams also participated in the final, and “The Economist Business” editor Mr. Wu Chen and more than 10 other industry leaders were appointed as judges. After the presentations and defense of their projects, the team from Peking University finally won first place.

SUSTech competition team instructor and academician Liu Ke was an excellent coach to the team. He said: “I strongly encourage the SUSTech students to go out and participate in competitions, it can effectively raise awareness of the university’s influence, and the future graduates themselves will benefit from the experience.”

Financial student Tang Shiyu said after the contest – still full of emotion: “This contest is my biggest gain is self-confidence, and Qing North, Fudan University, Zhongshan and other famous institutions were competing against us, it was definitely very competitive. Education not only allows us to develop strong technical and academic knowledge, it also helps us to improve our communication skills, teamwork and other aspects of soft power, so that we can provide flexible responses to different environments.”

The Economist” was founded more than 170 years and is one of the world’s oldest and most influential magazines. The faithful readers of this political and business magazine include policymakers, entrepreneurs, elites and other influential people. “The Economist – Businesswas launched in in Asia in May 2015 with its bilingual smartphone application, providing articles from the magazine about business, finance, science and technology and other strategic fields for Chinese readers, giving them a global perspective and in-depth analysis, to encourage them to think critically about China and the world’s major issues.
